Hi I'm chasing how much pressure I can run before I do damage to the motor. The motor has no egr as its a 94 model 110 wagon. I have the same question on the Australia web site
Thank you for anyone's time

Thank you for anyone's time

depends how you drive ,hours flat out on motorway or more normal landy driving if latter higher boost wont hurt it ,its not near the edge of performance

Has fair has I know Standard they run at 9psi i am running at 16psi and have turned up the pump and my disco goes like #### and has got lots of pull

Yes got a boost gauge on mine what's 1bar in psi ??

1bar is 14.5psi

Blue beastly beat me to it....

Has anyone run an EGT probe at 16psi to see what temps they are getting both with a standard and uprated cooler?

To be honest when you are cruising the motor way at 65mph I doubt very much if you are pulling much more thab 8-10psi. My Ford will pull upto 40 psi before waste gate opens (factory setting) On very hard acceleration from a stop 0-60mph i might pull 20-25psi and then once at speed 70-75mph it will pull just under 10psi, and at 50mph slightly less. And the EGT (pyro meter ) has always stayed in the green zone, Even pulling a long hill at 70mph with a loaded trailer foot to the floor pulling close to 30psi the EGT never went out of the green zone.

So with the above comment: If you have a good cooling system with a working fan ( mine has a electric clutch fans comes on under load and at motor way speeds does not come on when it is just the truck itself) and the inter cooler is clean, radiator clean , not mud or crap (look between them as this is often missed) you should never have a issue, Defender engines are detuned for a reason, easiest way is a small turbo. Look at the puma with there ford engine it has a lower hp rating than what is in ford vehicles by 25-40 hp.

So do you think I could boost up a little bit more ? I am going to be what a bigger cooler 1st tho

Yes. But a larger inter cooler will make a difference. But you got to get rid of hear so cooling system is important. It all comes down to how much money do you want to spend? Think a 300 tdi with want is out there you can gain about 50hp, With a TD5 you can get 240hp,max but it all coes down to money, as in how much you got.

Your better choice is check you timing and fueling, you can get some get up and go from that, And make sure your cooling system is 100%,the space between inter cooler and rad can pack full of dirt and crap, but when looking from the front it will look nice. So get your head in there with a torch and have a good look. Make sure your timing belt is in tip top shape, as playing round wanting more power can play up the timing belt, then you got more expense.

Guess what I am saying is if you got extra money go for it. If you are on a shoe string budget (not much extra) have a second thought as it will cost extra money to keep it running

I have just dun the Head gasket and put a new timing Belt on it I also Polished and tryyed to port the head and relaped the Valves so its running good .my plan is to get a Universal intercooler off eBay and fit it Myself then wind up the pump up a little bit more and turn the boost up 18/20 psi I should fit a Exhaust temperature gauge to ?! I not going to go to mad tho I don't want to keep blowing up the Engine haha

Re think ebay........... they make a inter cooler for off roading has bigger spacing in the fins, to allow you a easier time of washing out the mud and dirt. a closely spaced fins plug up with mud and dirt and are very hard to clean out. :)

This is very true I can get a cooler of eBay for about £200 with pipes or I have seen proper 300tdi 2nd hand ones going for the same sort of money will prob go down that route . What do you think a safe psi you can set your boost to with a bigger cooler fitted ??
