Hi all,

I've been searching through the different threads on here for a while, but though many people sem to state what speed their Landys can achieve, no one seems to state what the top speed of a 200tdi should be.

Mines an E reg 90 with the later 200 engine fitted, I'm new to Landrovers but am suprised that it struggles on the flat to go much over 60, max speed with no tail wind/headwind etc maxs out at about maybe 70. At that speed it gulps diesel. Also day to day running and not driving much about 55/60 she returns about 23MPG. Is that a decent figure or should it be higher?

Good site by the way

Me old 200 would cruise happily @ 70, overtake on a motorway without a fuss up to about 80/85..........that was about it's lot.

I tried to cruise more at about 65, it just sounded happier a shade under 70mph.

i've had mine up to 80, but it din't sound happy. 65 is a good cruising speed.
i get about 29/30 mpg, but i do a lot of low speed / off road.

Your stats indicate about the same as a TD, not a TDi - although the gearing is the same on both the td and the 200 so that's kind of the limiting factor where speed is concerned. The mpg is way low for a tdi!

The guy I bought it from stated it was running rich, this had been set intentionally (so i was told, i have no idea) because it's better for off roading.

Would that be a cause of the limited speed and excessive MPG? Also if this is the case, what can I do to adjust the mixture?

Or has he been telling me porky pies?

I make furniture for a living, unfortunatly i have little engineering skill

My 2.5N/A gives better performance, and I am not kidding!

How many miles has your engine done, it could be in desperate need of the inlet manifold, intercooler and connecting pipework needing cleaned out. I would also block of the EGR at this point if you have not already done so - it is this that fills the aformentioned components with most the sludge build up in the first place.

Your turbo wastegate could be jammed open a bit and is not giving full boost.

You can back the max fuel delivery off on the injector pump.

Clean it all up give it a service, new air filter etc... then take it for a spin, with the foot right down check for black smoke, now back of the MAX fuel delivery on the IP untill it no longer smokes - it may need a few tweaks to get it right on.

I don't see it being that good for offroading to be honest - its just a waste of fuel.

duz the 200TDi have EGR?

max speed is 9.8 metres per second squared minus a drag coefficient when dropped off a cliff.
Tha int max speed, thas asseleration under the power of gravverty. If you add a 2.5 rover lump to it even gravity slows down!!!

Thanks for all the replies

Just been for a quick flat out spin, no wind .................. 75MPH on dead flat road, took bloody ages to get up to that speed. On a very slight incline 1:75? dropped to 66MPH

Engine believed to have done about 127000 miles

nope no egr on a 200tdi, mine does 80mph flat out drops to a steady 70 on hills but i am forcing it to turn 33x12.50x15's..... i could get a bit more but ive set the fuelling so it doesn't smoke, boost is upped as is off boost fuelling..

runs best at a steady 70mph ...... running 80% veg oil all the time.. average 27mpg

cheers steve

I am running 265 75 16 tyres, would that reduce MPH & MPG by much?

steves 33" tyres are bigger and wider than yours.

a taller tyre will increase the top speed, but itl take longer to get up there so less acceleration. a wider tyre will create more resistance so increase fuel consumption.

ive read the replies in this thread with great interest, ive got a 200tdi disco to retro fit the engine into my TD 90.

hopefully with the tdi engine and the disco tranny box in place as well il have a happy 70-80mph cruiser, unlike the 50-60mph cruiser (70 is a real push) i get from my TD at the mo.

couple that with the upgraded intercooler and turbo/fueling tweak im gona do when finances allow, which should give me 140-150bhp, and i mite even be able to overtake at those sorta speeds as well! just dont look at the fuel gauge.....

fook is that all your getting outta the 90's? my disco is a 200 tdi on 185k on the clock its touched just over the 100 mark full pelt in the spring (wind none and air temp cool) but it will still pull 80 into a headwind, aint really done high speed since boosting the turbo and playing with the fuelling. but my intercooler has been cleaned out.

disco's have diffrent gearing and also the 200 tdi has 10bhp more in a standard disco than in a standard defender 200tdi hence you large diffrence in speed RAZ every 1 seems to think the power from a 200tdi is the same as a 300 and both disco and defender power is the same just cuz haynes says so:D

the egr is only fitted to the later 300's
