Hi, does anyone know if Millers syntran fe 75w90 is ok to use in 07 defender manual g/box? Also is it ok for transfer box too? Seems to be ok for both according to my inexperienced eye? Cheers.
I did some research on exactly this over xmas when I was sorting out oil for my diffs, transfer box and cog box (2012 defender). Not at home until the weekend so can't get at my notebook so from memory;
In my case the diffs oil is changed at 24k miles / 2 years and mineral oil is specified.
The transfer box is changed at the same intervals, GL4 or GL5 is ok. I would opt for a fully synthetic 75/90 known brand.
The gear box is filled for life but I plan to change it at 50k anyway. The handbook reference is vague but I related it to a German brand Ravenol which referenced the strange numbers in the handbook, and back-referenced this to a fully synthetic GL5 75/90. From this I related it to be similar to Castrol Syntrax (not to be confused with Syntrans).
Can't remember which way round it goes but I think GL4 is an old 1970's spec tolerant to bronze bits in the gear box and GL5 more recent (1990's?) spec but not tolerant to bronze. Anyway, it seems that defenders can use GL4 or GL5 without problems. Anyway I concluded that the best oil for the gear box and transfer box will be a fully synthetic 75/90 which the manufacturer says is ok for heavy duty use (heavy goods vehicles) and meets GL4 and GL5 specifications.
That all said, I still only changed the diffs, still need to get the oil for the transfer box. Gear box in about 2 years time on current mileage.
If you would like more info let me know and I will add more info at the weekend.
