Since May this year I have been having a nightmare with my L322 TD6.
Started with a blown turbo, my normal garage were closed at the time so rather than be patient (first huge mistake) I took it to another garage. Very long storry short, the engine was sent away for a full rebuild along with the turbo. This was then returned and fitted by the local garage.

As per another thread I posted they warned me it would be smokey but this would ease as the oil burnt off, sounds normal (ive had turbos go on other cars before). Trouble is after approx 300miles the smoke was getting worse, I rang the garage to make sure all filters where changed and they confirmed this was the case, however my trust was wearing thin so after studying the forum I took a look at the crackcase breather. It was caked in oil, I mean caked. So, I changed this for the BMW style cyclone filter. Perfect, smoked stopped instantly car ran fine for a few days.

Then this leads me onto my next problem, my turbo has started to sound like Im being chased by the police. The people who refurb it are blaming the garage that fitted in and visa versa so once again I am stuck in the middle. The car seems to drive fine but just sounds terrible. Ive had it into my normal garage and they have checked all the hoses etc but its coming form the turbo which appears to already be on its way out after less than a 1000 miles.

So, I am resigned to the fact of fitting another turbo, I had a look around last night and it seems do able as a DIY job, I'm far from a mechanic but work in engineering so if I take my time Im pretty comfortable following this guide

(am I missing anything from the above guide)

My question after all that is do I need to remove the intercooler and flush and clean/flush it before fitting the new turbo? If so is it at all possible to do this in situ simply as it looks a pig of a job to remove I do have access to a compressor/airline if that helps?

Finally assuming I do have to flush it out what would I use as a cleaner fluid?

I really would appriciate any pointer on this.
 
Paraffin will do as long as it is properly drained. Several applications swished around will sort it. Then a good blow out with the airline. Acetone is good if you can get some because that will evaporate and leave no residual fluid.

or take it to a radiator shop and have then clean it with hot water and steam

Ok thanks for the replies, so is there no way of being able to to this with it still in the car?
 
Ok, I've removed the turbo and sent that away for refurb and finally last night managed to get the visous fan off.
I assumed that this would give me clearance to simply lift the intercooler out through the gap where the fan was but no joy, it still seems to big for the gap.
The rave manual simply says carefully removed the intercooler once the fan is removed but there must still be a knack of getting it up through the gap, has anyone got any pointers please as I was hoping to put the whole things back together this weekend but until I can get the intercooler out Im slightly stuck.
