Hi chaps & ladies.

Considering upgrading to a Td5. I do a bit of laning and was just curious as to how they get on with water. I'm not going wading up to the top of the doors but sometimes the odd river crossing can get up to middle of the grill. If you get me. If they're no good I'll probably stay 300tdi.

Thank you

Fine. Been headlight depth in mine a fair few times, no issues. However with filthy silty water it did wreck my alternator and starter but that was partially due to me sitting in the muck being suck! The ECU is fairly high up, just below the drivers side seat, in the seat box. So you are going to have to be pretty deep and sitting for a while that box to fill up.

Few things you can do however, if very worried.

Extension loom £250+ but you can put the ECU anywhere.

Seal the ECU seatbox against water ingress

Seal the wires going into the ECU with sealant - I spoke to a chap who knew TD5s very well (for the life of me cant remember now..) said the ECUs are actually waterproof/resistant and the problem happens when water gets in through the cables causing a short. Sealing those holes up should solve that issue. - This is what I have done.

(all this relates to a Defender 90)

Should be no probs. If you plan lots of water crossing however, you'll want to extend the axle breathers and ensure the intake won't suck any water in.

alternators fook up regular in muddy water, other than that no problems with mine and its been upto the windscreen on a few occasions

Accy carries a spare it's such a common issue.

It's not really a massive deal other than they won't run for long without.

Runs a fair way, mine conked out in Paddock Wood, sill got a couple hours off roading and the 45 min drive home!

Are standard axle breather run to underside of windscreen like D1's?

i won't be doing muddy water, just the odd ford and river crossing, i dont actually want to get the inside wet, but there'll be the odd time when i get too deep.

I tend to use those 2 fords quite often when going to and from St Albans from home. It's not a short cut but is far more fun than driving down the main road :D

Nope, much shorter, not hard to extend and very cheap.

I extended both axles, tranny box and gearbox into the engine bay. Combined 4 into 2 then ran them up to my snorkle. Cost all of £16 for the bits off ebay. Cheap and worth doing, just dont let em get blocked up.
