So I've heard a few bad rumours about the td5 engines. What's your verdict on the engine and have you had any bad experiences with them ?
I'm after buying a td5 and I'm just looking for common problems with the engine so I know what to look out for. Also what are they like when they're tuned ?

Main thing is the electrics. At least they have been all my major issues...

Tuning is easy, can be pushed to 190 odd bhp with not that much cash spent. Can go up to around 250bhp but more extensive engine mods are required.

He did not say rather a Disco, or defender.
Disco has more electrics doesn't it, and air suspension? AC or not. To many variables with his question to give a really good answer
 
Speak to Shifty he's your man for all things TD5. My 2005 defender has now done 92000 miles with no problems. The clutch was changed just before i got it other than brake pads and a swivel seal the only thing done to it is regular servicing.
 
Air suspension was an option wasn't it? Active Corner Enhancement was, & aircon too. You might find a Disco 2 without these. (2 out of 3 ain't bad as Meatloaf once sang - no SLS or ACE on mine, just the air con needs re-gassing (...I think...)

Either defender or discovery, as they both have the same engine they will have some of the same problems in common ?
Ideally a defender was in mind, my dad said his old td5 defender was hard work. He had two ecu's, all the injectors renewed, it has a sticky ingector on the third cylinder and if it got bellow 0 degrees he lost a lot of engine power. He recommended I didn't go down the td5 line but I don't particularly want a tdi and I don't like the way the tdci drives. Plus I've always loved the way the td5's sounds.

Had my 2001 td5 fender about 5 years its done just over 100000 miles and can't fault it, like all motors if you look after them they are fine, abuse them and they will bite you on the arse. Remove centre exhaust box, egr ,get dyna chip to remap it and enjoy.
 
I agree, my dad bought that td5 from new though and it couldn't of had a better life. It was more of a toy than anything but can with all those problems plus the doors would never shut, they just bounced back open.
 
My Td5 Defender has just over 112,000 on it and I love it. My mates is just coming up to 200,000, its been to North Africa once and he's planning on taking it over again. He's just changed the clutch & box (still working just worn) but other than that no issues.
 
my 54 plate 110 has done just shy of 100k apart from a few miner problems been a great motor.
wish I could afford a td5 motor to go in my old 90 off roader :(
 
I do love the td5 engine, my dads old one is for sale at the moment and I was considering buying it back however he really doesn't want me to because it was just so much trouble

Those issue have been taken care of. Oil in loom was a oil seal, has been a repare part issued/available for that. The ecu's was caused by that and they can be cleaned out, Sticky injector goes back to ecu,oil in loom giving false signal, electronic injectors, can happen on any diesel engine, regardless of make. 0 degree engine power loss is fix able. Does it still do it?

Did he get the td5 as new and repairs were carried out with a land rover main dealer under warranty?

TD5's are great, they wouldnt be as worth the same as other defenders if they weren't. The market for them would have died.
