Do'er of stuff and the like
yes yes another one of those!

Ive just picked up another td5 (mainly to annoy the wife as its a higher spec than hers) as a none runner. 2003. So 15p engine.
Ive got it turning over, changed the fuel pump (old one wasn't activating), and its now making the good ol bbzzzzz as it should. However its not building pressure up, the fuel seems to be running straight back to the tank. The note of the fuel pump should change as it builds up pressure etc. Theres none of that it just runs like its free flowing.

Does go to the fuel filter, (if i whip the water plug off the bottom with the pump on it will absolutely pour out)

Pump turns on for 20 or so secs then off, then back on, off, on.

Valve on the fuel filter? (im not sure how the fuel system works exactly on the td5 to be honest), oil level isn't rising in the block. Cant see any leaks anywhere.

Any thoughts? Im stuck to running around in a gaylander till its fixed!

Also,

Have you checked the crank sensor? Battery voltage?

Cheers

Good point on the pipes being in the right order...I put them back on to what they were on the pump already ... white green blue black... so i think thats correct.

crank position, this was something i had thought about but i can hear the pump isn't building pressure. its tone isn't changing at all. No gurgling during the fuel purge cycle (despite the lines having been opened so theres plenty of air in there).

battery is spot on and cranks over really well like a td5 should. Ive had a jump start off the running wifes td5 too and its a no go. With a bit of easy start it'll pop and fart but not run. So no fuel pressure.

tried a tow start too and that didn't work.

Here's the layout of the Td5 fuel system for you, Vil. I hope it's a bity of help for you.
As you can see it's a bit "back and fore" around the pump and filter.

My Fathers td5 had aknackered pump it would make a noise but when I checke dthe flow at the fpr it was nowhere near the flow stated in the book.

Cheers

@brian47

In the good book iirc a few pages later it states the pipe colour , may be useful to vil

found on this forum. It is correct. Annoyingly the previously owner has hacked out a piece of the boot floor to improve the access to the fuel pumps. Bit aggressive really!

The pump is a new one from bear mach, unless its a duff'un of course

Rather irritatingly the wifes disco started being a little bugger yesterday as well. Runs ok for a few seconds, but then seems to be misfiring and loses loads of power, bit of smoke etc. And the fuel pump on that DOES sound rough as a badger. So thats on the list to get sorted this weekend.

Bloody things!

Will see if I can bodge a pressure indicator onto it, I’m sure I’ve got something kicking about

I did not have the pressure guage with me at the time, i just measured the flow over 10 seconds into a jug

Cheers

I had a similar problem to the initial post with my td5 defender running great then boom dead... would crank etc but wouldn't go, no fuel pressure, new pump, no fuel pressure.

It took forever and deep pockets to find. It was a funny little air bleed in the fuel filter housing. the white palstic gauze material had come out and was allowing all the fuel to go back straight into the tank. When you look at the filter on a defender it was on of the to hoses on the left hand side of the filter housing.

Aye I’ve been thinking along those lines, I happen to have s new valve from a few years back, I’ll dig that out and fit it tonight. Worth a try, it’ll either sort it or rule it out.

Ah balls

I left it purging fir about ten minutes, with another new pump in it.

Oil levels started going up

Injector seals time

Ok seals and o rings changed, injectors all adjusted.

Sod still wont start.

Crank position sensor maybe? I’ve had the nanocom on it with no faults shown.

To the sadistic git of an engineer who positioned the cps.

Don’t worry pal, I don’t need the skin on the back of my hand

Ow ... well that was a waste of time. Another scan with the nanocom and it’s reading rpms when cranking, still no faults logged

If I disconnect the fuel hose from the fuel cooler, should it be blasting out? There’s only a gentle dribble from the hose, none from the cooler. Is this right?

...
Scratch that it’s not right

Just took the hose off the wife’s td5 and it absolutely ****es out

Right so it’s a fuel issue

Ok I’ve checked the green coloured pipe on the fuel diagram and it’s not really flowing like it should. This is directly out of the pump.

The love return is flowing much better.

3 pumps all duff? Or is something else at play
