Hi guy hopefully someone can help me with this issue iam having.
Rite it's a 2005 defender 110 td5 which my mate has just bought, starts no bother at all but won't rev past say 2500 revs and belts loads of black smoke out (loads and loads) initially thought an egr problem as I disconnected the small pipe which goes from exhaust to water cooler then egr valve and it revved out ok so I put a egr bypass kit on it started it and still the same, so then wondered if it was a couple of faults and maybe an injector harness issue too so pulled the plug off the harness and it was full of oil so I've changed that today and cleaned out the ecu and thought that had to be it so started it and still exactly the same. Again I've removed the small pipe at the exhaust manifold and started it and it revs up. Any help greatly appriciated

Hello Langer, I'm your plural alter-ego, Langers :D

Know anybody with a plug-in diagnostics machine? Might be an idea to pull some fault codes off it and see what the ECU is thinking... :scratching_chin:

LOL...
I have a snapon ethos but wasn't sure if it would read it or not. I'll plug it in tomorrow and see if it reads it. Is the plug in the same place as a disco do you know?

As far as I remember, it's just under the front center seat. Not sure about your Snap On gizmo. Worth a try though

My Disco td5 had this problem and it turned out to be the fuel filter blocked. Pump was struggling to get fuel into engine, this caused erratic fueling and comedy black smoke out the back. Also would not rev past 1800rpm. Looked like something 007 would use to shake off a villain.

I tried disconnecting the maf before i put the snapon machine on it but was still the same. It came up originally with 19 fault codes lol so cleared them and now it has 6 here they are:
Fuel pump drive open load fault
Tacho drive open load fault
Gearbox/abs open load fault x2
A/c clutch drive open load fault x2

Have you checked for a split or de-laminated turbo hose, blocked air filter, excess oil in the intercooler hoses?

Yeah the air filter was first thing I checked as sounded 'throaty' was just the filter lid wasn't on rite, it's got a new filter in it too. Had a quick look at the pipes but never saw anything untoward.
How come the faults that are stored normal??

Think I'll chuck a filter on it tomorrow worth a try.

Cos the wiring loom in your defender has the extra connections for auto gearbox, tachograph, abs etc but your vehicle doesn't have anything fitted on the end of the wires hence them all being 'open load'.

Take the turbo hoses off and check inside em for de-laminating and wet oil while yer at it. Have you cleaned your map sensor recently too?

Ah rite I get you. What is the fuel pump drive fault? Surley it has a fuel pump.
I'll check the pipes tomorrow but the smoke isn't oil smoke it's thick black smoke

Checked the hoses today and changed map sensor and it's still the same. Really can't see it being the fuel filter or the pedal as i stated in origional post it revs out if I remove the small pipe from the exhaust manifold to the water cooler/egr. Checked the turbo too it moves freely as does the wastegate. Any other ideas guys?

TD5 right . did you check your loom for oil into the ecu? and maybe you need a new loom and red thingy in the rocker cover. Think ratty did a thread about it in the td5 section

Yeah td5. I've changed the injector loom which had oil in it and removed the ecu and cleaned the plug although there wasn't that much at the ecu, what red thing are you talking about at the rocker cover?

There is a o-ring/seal kit for it to stop the oil leaking into the loom
