I've got an annoying problem with my recently purchased 1998 discovery 2 td5. The problem is as follows: it is very hard to start, engine turns over for 10-15 seconds maybe longer before it fires up, once running it runs lumpy for 30 seconds with white/grey smoke from the exhaust. Then it runs ok and the smoke starts to clear after a couple of minutes. Then it's fine until you turn it off again then it still starts difficult but I doesn't smoke when warm. That's only the first of the running problems, once it's running it revs normal out of gear and idles well, once driving thou it has major issues: once you reach 2800-3000 rpm in all gears it looses power and splutters and wont pull but when you change up to the next gear it's fine again until 2800-3000 rpm's again, so in 5th 65 to 70 mph is flat out and has no pull up hills due to this issue. I've changed fuel filter and bled but it still does it, also makes no difference if tank is full or empty. Any advice please help as I'm running short on ideas and really need to resolve this issue ASAP.

Also a massive thanks to those who helped my sort the indicator wiring issue!!!

THANKYOU

I'm more of a v8 man really but have been forced into diesel by the mrs.

First thing to be doing is checking heater plugs(do td5 have these?) I think white smoke is usually unburnt diesel so there is fuel there, could the pump be on its way out/are they timed on the td5(or am I still thinking of the older engines, mainly plant machinery)

I would be looking also at the injector harness, this is a well known issue with this engine, oil in the plug at the ecu, in fact this is about £30 to replace so maybe the first thing to look at?

Or you could always check each injector. I saw ed do it on w/dealers but can't remember how. It might be dangerous so be careful.

It could be boost pipes check intercooler and pipework.sounds more like fuel pump issue.if it will limp to coalville i have a spare you can try.

I would check the fuel pump, mine lacked power and then failed to start after cutting out, did all the usual checks then ended up at the pump, mine looked like this when i removed it, cleaned it, replaced it and now runs fine.

Hi, thank you for the suggestions and I will remove the fuel sender pump Friday and hopefully that will sort that. An I right in thinking that the boot floor doesn't have an access hole like the previous discos did?

No you're not right !!

There is a circular access panel exactly the same as Disco TDi.

If you do have the misfortune to find this kind of gunge in the filter, it looks a bit like the "deisel bug".

Do a search on the site for the diesel bug, there's a bit about it on here.

Id say your starting/smoking problems could be injector related, possibly the injector seals and washers, use genuine ones if your going to change them

Changed fuel sender pump, another filter and still persisting so now I'm going to start on the injectors :-(

Not sure about your starting issues, but the lads have mentioned the obvious oil running down the injector harness down to the ecu plug. You could always try some electrical contact cleaner on these connections to see if it makes a difference! Also as for not going over 2800rpm, check out the wastegate and that it moves with some mole grips as I had exactly that issue when I bought my td5 last year. Good luck.

Massive thank you, cleaned and lubricated waste gate which was not very free at all and boom, I have power and revs :) yay! Now for the starting issue, I'm on a roll and feeling lucky

Have ordered injector seals and harness ready to change and I think I will be there, thanks for all of the help and I'll keep you posted as to outcome

I have got a harness waiting in the garage. I will get a cam cover gasket soon rather than put the old on. I don't have any problems yet, but there is oil on my ecu plug!!
