hi guys when i start my td5 in morn get lot of white smoke and runs like bag of nails for few seconds then picks up. worse on cold days have done head gasget and replaced injector harnes. any ideas cheers all

Have had same with mine recently, I also changed glow plugs (they were fooked) air filter was all clogged up even after 6 months of changing it last, how long ago was head gasket done ? mine was done 18 months ago and I still think its gone again, was getting white smiko until I added a small bottle of what could be rad weld to over flow tank, it says it will stop leaks and even stop head gasket leaks and repair cracked heads, £9.99 later and within ten mins no more white smoke, deep down though i will be getting a new gasket.
I'm sure someone will put ya right after me.....

Good luck

Lots of previous discussion on this. From what you say it's one of two things:

1) Glow plugs not working. The smoke is blueish white, stinks of diesel and goes away when warmed up. This is standard on old engines (eg Military Bedfords) with no glow plugs.

2) Cracked head or head gasket allowing water to collect in head. The white smoke is steam, and tends to smell of coolant. However you've changed the HG and this is more likely to happen with engine hot. There would also be coolant loss.

So try the glow plugs.

Unlike me dont be fooled by a five cylinder TD5 having 5 glow plugs......they only have four plugs?, Fiddly but dead easy to do ya self.

that's right, and is why they often sound a bit lumpy at startup untill the 5th cylinder kicks in

cheers guys will try glow plugs head was only done few months ago although im not convinced it right as heater still crap and takes an age to warm up a little

Quite a few recent threads on heater malfunction as well! Good luck.

Oh and remember that even if the glow plugs are OK the power supply to them may not be. Test everything!:)

The TD5 engine really needs a good glow to fire it up cleanly, so don't try the starter till the wee light goes out.

DO NOT PRESS THE THROTTLE while starting a td5 as this will probably send the injectors into priming mode which flings in HUGE amounts of fuel if it doesn't actually need primed, and make a lot of smelly white smoke ....

hi all just an up date looked at water leavel and found header tank to be full of oil great back off to garage to have head off again only done in december im hoping it just head nakered and not block why would any one buy a land rover cant belive the agro and money this thing is costing me

Unlikely to be the block. If you're lucky it's the gasket again. Check whether they used metal or plastic locating dowels. if they used plastic make sure they use metal next time. Presumably they'll do the gasket under warranty. Even if they say it's the gasket, GET THEM TO PRESSURE TEST THE HEAD. Unfortunately cracked head is quite common on this engine. And not cheap to replace (see various threads on this).

Is it black or clear looking?

if it's black it's oil. It could be knackered fuel cooler it could be H/G it could simply be like mine was that it is still gradually cleaning oil residue from the past headgasket fault out the waterways.

If it's clear then fuel cooler is the most likely culprit. I've bypassed mine cos I was adding 2" of fuel for every 200-300 miles to my header tank. Since the bypass I've done 500-600 miles and have not added any. It cost me £2 for a T-peice rather than £230 for a new fuel cooler. Don't be tempted to buy one off ebay. I bought 2 and they were both knackered.

Have you bypassed the fuel cooler right out?

Remember than the fuel returning from the TD5 cylinder head fuel gallery is VERY hot indeed, and is cooled so that it cannot be hotter than about 70°C when it returns to the filterhead and fuel tank.

It may be almost OK to by-pass the cooler in winter, but I think you may end up in trouble in warmer weather, as the fuel could be well over 100°C heading back to the tank.

After a decent run, feel the filter in the right rear wing. It may be so hot you can't touch it. If the fuel going back is too hot the plastic pipes and bits and pieces may come to harm.

That's why they had to (as in HAD TO) fit a fuel cooler in the first place.

the oil in header tank is of the black gold variety I'm afraid. just going to the filter being hot is this the norm cos when i changed it a month or so ago the one i took off was really hot and the wires at the bottom had broken,i thought they were just for water in filter sensor

Hi CharlesY

I bypassed it to see if that was the fault. My guess turned out to be correct. I have obtained one of the newer 'heat sink' type fuel coolers but I need to make a reducer pipe up as the older 3 connection cylinder type ones have 2 large coolant hose connections and one small one. The newer 2 connection type ones have 2 small connections.

I kept my diagnostic plugged in during a days offroading last weekend. The fuel inlet temp stayed steady at 66. I know it's on the inlet not outlet side of the system but if the temp of the fuel in the tank was rising I would have thought the inlet temp would rise too. I am keeping the tank above half at all times too until I get it properly sorted.

Cheers

update on td5 head off for pressure test along with oil cooler as they not sure which is to blame cooler looks like suspect to me though any one elss had prob with them

I didn't have the oil cooler fail on me but the heater had been bypassed on my 1999 TD5 when I bought it. It was choked with oil where the oil cooler had pumped it's contents into the coolant prior to me buying it. I have only just got rid of the last of the residue a couple of months back.

If it is large quantities of oil it is more likely to be the oil cooler than the HG. My landy also had distorted nylon dowels when I bought it. It passed 2 pressure compression tests and 2 sniff tests with no problems. I could drive 1000 miles with no issues and then on a short trip of say 10-20 miles it would overpressurise. I could leave it running all day with no overheating either. I got fed up and said sod it and replaced the head gasket. Apart from the blown fuel cooler as a result of the headgasket It has been fine evr since.

the header tank was full to the top with oil and cooler looked really bad so wel see Wat pressure test bring in some way s i hope it oil cooler not head mind still 350 quid arnt they cant see a lot of change out of a grand coming

Surely this is ok for a temporary repair ? Are the quick fit pipes 8 mm ?i need to get this sorted ASAP need the car before I can get a new cooler at the weekend
