Just bought an 02 Commercial with a TD5. My other car is an Ibiza with the PD130 engine which is quite particular to what spec of oil it drinks. Both the TD5 and Ibiza use the same viscosity oil, 5w/30. Would the class know if using the VW spec oil would be ok in the TD5? It would mean I can save money by buying in bulk

I’m about to put PD 5/40 in mine. There’s a number of arguments of what different individuals think, my opinion on reading them all is the PD oil makes sense. There are others than believe it’s a terrible idea. I don’t think you’ll get a definitive decision either way as both sides seem passionate about why their opinion is correct.

Thank you all for your input.
I spent over an hour saturday reading one forum after another. I must have made up my mind five times, then changed it... In the end I plugged in the crystal ball, dropped the chicken bones then tossed a coin and I ended up buying a 20 litre tub of

£42.99 delivered. That works out at £2.15 per litre

I'll be looking for a service kit at Great Billing at the end of the month. Looking forward to trying this new fangled hill descent gizmo for the first time...

I’ve never used mine, don’t really plan to either, have heard stories of it disengaging by itself. Did try once but couldn’t make it work, haven’t exactly read how to do it though!!! My high/low switch is lazy to detect the change so I assume that may be the culprit.

Auto, lock in first low range and crawl down pretty much the same as I used to in my manual D1.

It'll be more out of curiosity than anything. I'll soon have a locking centre diff installed and then it'll be business as usual. Centre diff locked and down in low first.
DO you get engine braking with an auto locked in first? I've always envisaged careering down the hill picking up speed inducing chronically clenched buttocks in an auto!
Personally, I hate autos...
My first Disco 1 was a 300TDi ES auto. I thought I'd grow to like it, but I hated it a little more every day I owned it.
Dangerously slow off the line, I mean SERIOUSLY DANGEROUSLY slow and didn't slip into top until around 55 mph, which meant if I stuck to the speed limit 90% of my 10 mile journey to work was driving at high revs in 3rd.
Then there was the time my mechanic cousin was half way to my works because it wouldn't start. Then I noticed it was in D and not P...
I wouldn't have minded but I did this after driving it for about three months!
Had my turn in laughing at my mate at work who bought it off me about a week into his ownership who did the same thing

Haha. I too have wondered why mine would t start before realising! Didn’t take me long to realise though. My TD5 was rapid with the tuning box on but took that off and I have to say it drives much nicer now. I don’t the the gearbox really understood the extra power, I expect a proper map would be much better. I was apprehensive going from a D1 manual to the D2 auto but honestly I prefer it off road. Maybe marginally less control but it is easier, you can set it to manual and pick what gear you want and still get plenty of engine braking. I’ve not needed hill descent and those I know that have used it don’t like it.

I don’t have a centre locking diff sadly despite what the sticker says! Has been fine with everything I’ve done so far, just have to learn how the traction control works. Would consider fitting one or an Ashcroft atb if I had the time and money though.
