Hi all i have a 1999 Td5 disco
i have a couple of problems that i have found since i got it yesterday
the first problem is as in the title
when it gets to 70mph it seems to start to drone and you feel a vibration in the car ......i thought maybe wheel balancing,it has 255/55/18's on don't know if they are standard or been added after
when you get to about 80--85 car goes smooth again vibrating stops
second problem is on the drive home srs light came on
but had a read through the other posts none of the tips helped to reset it so maybe just let it stay on for a bit as unsure what way to go with that one
 
Hmm. At 70 my TD5 is humming a little and telling me it doesn't really want to go much faster. At 85 the big lummox is saying it'll do that speed but really doesn't like it and is telling me to slow down. Noises mostly are wind, these aren't aerodynamically very good vehicles. You can hear especially the wind around the front windows and if you've got AT tyres on or mud tyres, they'll certainly make a bit of noise at those speeds.

As for the SRS light coming on, check the connection under the front passenger seat, failing that, it'll probably need plugged in and resetting. I had that problem on a previous Disco 2 and it stopped by itself after a while. Sometimes that happens...
 
It's as sweet as a nut up to 67mph just normal wind and tyre noise then at 70 it's almost like a bad vibration or rumbling as if the wheel is warped buckled or bad bearing then you hit 80it kind of stops and sweet as a nut again but defiantly around rear axle
As for srs tried the yellow plugs unplug and put back in but didn't work
 
Hi Shane it sounds to me like you have a propshaft relate issue, could be:

1. The rubber doughnut. This is the flexible connector that goes between the propshaft and the rear diff. These start to disintegrate with age and use so as you just got the vehicle it might be a good idea to just replace it.

Do not be tempted to buy a cheapy, go GKN only - about £30 and an easy job to do.

As Dave says, probably propshaft related.

Ours had exactly the same symptoms at the same speeds and it turned out to be one of the u/j's in the double joint on the front propshaft.

I got a GKN one from island 4x4 and I think it was only about £15-00.

GDM are these easy enough to fit
i only ask as never done one before

They are quite easy but you really need a vice to press the bearing cups into the yokes.

The double cardan is a little more fiddly but not particularly difficult.

Try doing a search on youtube.

You will be able to detect wear in them on the car, just twist either side of each joint and watch the u/j spider.
 
well new rubber and uj ordered and service kit
would have had them today but they came when i was at work
will fit them saturday touch wood
 
Maybe worth checking all the nuts & bolts are tight on the prop before you strip it down, then take it for a test drive, it may well just be a loose nut causing the vibration.
