Don't worry about it until it's hard to start... As Brown has mentioned no td5 is the same... have you ever had your manifold refaced? My other td5 used to always run funny until the manifold was skimmed and de webbed then it was smooth as silk from then on

No it's never been touched. There's always been a smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin when the heater is on, unless it's windy when it doesn't seem to happen.

Could there be any kind of a leak in the manifold area? I had a leak around the blanking plate on the EGR pipe, and it made the engine smokier, smellier and rougher until I drilled the remains of the bolts out and retapped the holes. Since then it's been a lot better.
