Hi guys, got a strange issue that comes and goes. When driving, just everyday driving, the disco seems to be "miss firing" and judders like hell, this has happened, when starting out or mid drive and once at 70 on the motorway (not good) turn the whole lot off and leave it for 30 seconds or so and start her back up again problem gone, some times for 10 minutes sometimes for weeks. The only consistency I've noted is I think I'm on about a 1/4 tank of juice each time. I'm still very new to landy care and have very limited knowledge, but I'm learning. Has anyone experienced this or have and ideas? I'd really appreciate any help with this. Many thanks in advance BB.
 
tank breather may be blocked,

failing that for peae of mind check the injector harness for oil and corrosion
 
Didn't think of checking the tank breather, checked main air filter and air intake and banged a new MAF unit in as that wasn't looking well. I'll check the breather and harness and see if that tells me anything.

I would say the easiest way to distinguish between myself and Blue Beasty would be that I'll be the one asking for advise rather than the one giving it out! But so save confusion I'll change the way I sign any text
 
Hi, Is there anyone near you that can put it on a Nanocom or similar to rule out the injector harness?

Not sure, I'm guessing that local landy spots could probably hook it up to one or something similar, was hoping to check as much as I myself first before fork out garage prices. Unless anyone is in the Penrith area that's reading this and could lend a hand in exchange for some bottles o' beer and maybe a meat pie!?
 
Update:
On advise from Griff I've been in touch with a mate of mine whose a aggie mech so has diagnostics for a Td5, so Sunday morning I'll get her plugged in and get under it whilst I'm there to have a look at the breather. Will post what I find. Beaut
 
The saga continues:
So it's time for a new injection harness! As you all predicted, old harness brittle connectors, brittle Orings and brittle seals, oil in the connections, oil in the harness, oil in the red plug, oil in everything!! Except inside the ECU, so that's something! Cleaned everything old re-sealed and she ran like a dream.... for about an hour then back with a vengeance came the juddering and power loss, ah well will get some new bits, get them whacked in and see what's next, think I have a way of sealing up the harness better, will have a go and post pics of what I do. Thanks again for the advice all, was a big help. Can anyone recommend/provide a link for a new harness, seen them priced between £23 and £98 which seems rather a lot! Cheers folks Beaut.
 
The oil in the injector harness can also run down inside the external harness to the ECU. It can take a while for that to drain out. You might have to take both the ECU plug and socket to bits to get more of the oil out.
 
Some people have had problems with pattern harnesses - it's best to get genuine. As Brian says, it can take some time for the oil to run right through.
I've taken the white spacer out of the ECU end red plug and drilled a hole so if any oil does get through it has a faint chance of draining out. But I changed the harness 5 years ago and the plug has remained dry since.
 
Are you sure it isn't in the ECU? If it is, even a small amount can cause issues. I took mine off and stood it socket face down over night on some paper towels. I also sprayed loads of electrical cleaner into the plug under the rocker housing every night for a week or so to chase the oil out of the wiring.
 
Yup, the inside of the ECU was as clean as a whistle, red plug was dripping in it but it seems to of stopped it from getting all the way through, already dowsed the red plug and the whole of the loom and connectors in electrical cleaning fluid, but didn't dig the white plastic out of the red plug, so that will be done this eve and I'll give the loom housing another flush through whilst I'm at it. Having trouble souring a genuine LR injector loom as suggested, anyone know who stocks them? Beaut

Even the closest inspection of the loom won't show the oil contamination. It doesn't run down the wires as you would think, but down between the actual copper of the wires and the inside of the insulation by capillary action. The only way to get it out of the loom again is by gravity and capillary action again but cleaning the plug will help.
 
Right o' I gotcha, well I just keep cleaning things out from the red plug end as it "drains" down and hopefully over time I'll get it back right again, thanks for the help and advice Brian.

It might be easier to clean out the harness when its warm.
I used an old Aquavac to help suck out the oil from the loom, and wrapped my hand around the plug to create a sort of seal.
Worked ok, oil has never re-appeared in the red plug.
