hi ive got a td5 which i service myself .I was under the impresion that it had a timming chain but i was reading someones for sale add and it said it had just had the timming belt done am i correct or not? cheers gary

This bit has to drive not only the cam-shaft but also the high-pressure injectors. Thankfully, the engineers decided a belt would not be up for it so went back to a chain drive:D
No more waiting for that nasty banging sound as the valves hit the pistons ?

Well, there was a case recently where a TD5 broke the chain into 2 seperate pieces, stronger yes... but you could still hear that nasty sound as the valves hit.

fair point. I remember many years ago when i was into SAABs there was a spate of those timing chains giving way and acting like cutters taking out the timing-chain cover. That was put down to faulty replacement of the joining link. Whether that could be the case here as well I don't know, but I certainly sleep sounder with a chain, not forgetting regular quality oil-changes (every 6K despite what the manual says).
