2000 Defender which has done 167k, been a great truck.
Recently had to replace the alternator after some very deep wading in mucky water.
Over the last week its not been wanting to start, initially thought it to be a dirty connection on the starter trigger wire, cleaned it up but little difference.
When trying to start it, with the key in the crank position, nothing - but leave it there and after a few seconds it cranks & fires. Having checked for power on the trigger wire it has 12v each and every time, so thats all good.
Yesterday i had to use it for towing (something i rarely do but it spent a couple of hours pulling reasonable weights around). At one point it struggled to start but sounded like fuel starvation, ie. started & very lumpy, stalled & had to crank for a while to restart - Never done this before.
So this morning, i removed the starter, took it apart, cleaned it up, cleaned up the copper contacts in the solanoid, & refitted. All good turns over beautifully. Started up and drove about 20 yards before stalling.
Now every time i try to start it it fires and immedietly dies.
Can hear the fuel pump priming, and have changed the fuel filter today, lots of fuel being pumped from the rear, tried the purge thing but still no go. Had some oil in the red ECU connection a couple of months ago, cleaned this out & its still dry & clean today.
So any ideas? sorry for the long post but thought id give you all the details, i read somewhere that the ecu takes an earth path through the starter? Ive tried attaching an earth strap directly from the starter housing to the battery - but still no go.
Just seems strange that its started doing this at the time the starter played up?
