Hi guys

My 2000 TD5 (96k miles) seems to be running very rich. When it's ticking over it absolutely stinks of diesel fumes even after a long journey of over 100 miles. When driving Infront of someone in the dark with their headlights on it's quite embarassing with quite alot of grey smoke. When its first started it chuffs out like an old TDI with a strong unburnt diesel smell, and this stays regardless of the journey length. Smells a right knacker. It seems to be getting through diesel too but I haven't actually properly checked this.

When left for a few days it always sounds like it's running on four cylinders for a few seconds and then clears. Not sure if that's due to cold weather. The glow plug light stays on first thing for about 20 seconds and takes a bit longer to crank.

Few things I've done unrelated to the smoking:
- injector seals (questioning if they need doing again)
-fpr
- full service
- waste gate freed off
- filter housing and valves correctly orientated
- injector loom
- breather separator replaced
- in tank pump cleaned and pressure checked
- EGR blanked
-decat before I bought it.

I'm unaware of any ECU adjustments of any kind. I've also tried forte diesel system cleaner with no luck.

Any ideas please guys.

Thanks alot

And check the Mass air flow meter.
I refitted my EGR and CAT as the exhaust on mine smelt badly and it made a vast improvement, although mine was not smokey.
MAF is dead, although I'm told it doesn't matter on the 10p engine as it only controls the EGR. I do wonder if there is slightly more to it than that though.
Also considering a CAT again too.
Thanks for reply

The MAF meter measures the air inlet and adjusts the fuel to suit the flow it should default to a mixture that will run the engine when it fails but it needs the MAF to run the correct mixture.

My 110 stank of diesel fumes when l first got it, in the end it was the MAF unit and the "CAT" was knackered

I fitted a £250 Britpart CAT pipe as the LR one was £900 (!!)
The first one wouldn't seal at the manifold, but the replacement was okay. Also the holes on the flange didn't line up very well at the centre box end on either unit.
Hopefully they've improved it since then...

The Landy passed the MOT every year since, and it does around 12,000 miles per year

Thanks alot guys.

I've just double checked the oil level. And it seems to be rising! I think I might have a cracked cylinder head as I've done the o rings and copper washers more than once in the last couple of years.

Could this be the reason for the grey smoke? I know it's not going to help, but I somehow can't see it being the cause.
