I have a Dec 2003 Discovery TD5 Auto GS with the following issues:
* Misfire on one cylinder (all the time)
* Heavy breathing in time with the misfire
* Serious smoke at any revs (black - diesel obviously)
* Diesel in the oil
I have purchased the car with the above fault and this is what I have done so far:
To get the car home (20 miles) I drained the 'diesel filled oil' and refilled with fresh oil. I noticed that the level of the contaminated oil was about 4" too high up the dip stick and a total of about 2.5 gallons of oil/diesel came out. (1.2-1.5 gallons went in roughly to refill)
The engine started OK but was missing on one and VERY smokey with very poor performance.
After 5 minutes of driving it basically cut out but would eventually start and idle roughly ok (with the missing still). It was clear that there was air getting into the fuel system/rail.
I removed the injectors (at the side of the road), cleaned and checked them and reinstalled and it once again started fine (smokey still) and drove for another 5 miles with smoke pouring from it and reduced power until it started to loose the ability to run again and eventually cut out as before.
I, at this time, decided to get a tow. I kept the engine running on idle for the remaining 10-15 miles home and it idled (and smoked) fine all the way home UNLESS I pushed the throttle at which time it would start running rough and cutout and then would take a while to restart.
Anyway, so far I have done the following:
* Removed the injectors and ordered new washers and seals to stop the diesel in the oil problem.
I am concluding that the diesel in the oil is from the common issue of a washer/seal gone on 1 or more of the injectors (being sorted). I also feel that the amount of diesel in the oil has produced such a high oil preassure that it has pushed out the top oil seal (which I also need to replace), but also may of contaminated the injector loom and ECU etc and therefore causing the misfire.
The last issue which I can't explain quite yet, but I am hoping is simply the injector washer(s) gone, is the heavy breathing issues.
So, to summerise, can (or is it likely) that a faulty injector or injector washer seal could of caused 'compression' to leak into the diesel channel, then pushed the now highly pressurised diesel passed the rubber seal into the oil causing the high level of diesel in the oil? Then could it be logical to think that the high oil/diesel level (together with the leaking compression) could of blown the seal (top front) but also pushed this very thin mix of diesel and oil down the injector loom into the ECU causing the misfire?
Does that make sense?
My dad is a retired deisel fitter, and although he assures me that a misfire on a diesel will result in heavy smoke, he had no experience of TD5 engines (mainly coaches and lorries) and therefore has little else to suggest.
