Hi folks i have just bought a 1999 disco td5 which as they all seem to be sluggish at certain points. has anybody got a suggestion as to either re map or chip. which is best .

Cant tell you which to go for, but moore power makes moore heat which stretches manifold bolts and snapps them, so do swap them for the suitable ones, lot fall fowl.

Hi

It might be worth checking a few things on your car as it could be down on power. There are sensors that can get dirty over time and affect performance. You could try the following...

1. The MAP sensor on the inlet manifold being bunged up with oil. Spray with contact cleaner to clean.

2. The MAF sensor after the airbox could be dirty. Clean element carefully with contact cleaner and a few cotton buds. Also clean the electrical contacts on the multi plug.

3. The EGR valve could do with being blanked off if not already done. There is no beneift to the EGR. Get a kit off Ebay for £6 or so.

4. Turbo wastegate arm can stick, affecting power.

I have dome all these on my 2000 TD5 since I got it. They all made a difference. Cleaning the MAP made a significant improvement. I cleaned the MAF on Thursday and the car is much nicer to drive. It pulls better, revs out more and genearlly feels much nicer to drive. Really happy with the result.

It's always a good idea to make sure the car is running right. A session on a disagnostic tool at an independant for £30 could also be a good idea.

From what I gather a remap is alway better than a plug in box, which just fools the signals from the ECU to the injectors.

Cheers

if you want power increase then these tuning modules are the way to go mate, they are special

my mate has one on his TD4 freelander and it does fly

have a word with Ian at King Quick and he'll explain it to you

his brain is extremely active so he talks at a million miles an hour usually lol

he know what he's talking about though

Kingquick Technologies Diesel Tuning units give you more performance, more power, more torque!

they come with genuine multi plugs and wiring harness

about 10 mins to fit and can be removed in the same time

best regards

get a re-map...

the TD5 engine is covered in sensors, a re-map will take into account all of these, a power chip will fool a few sensors into forcing overfueling..!

if you're gonna do it, do it properly!

I have to agree with 4x4forks.

Got my 2004 disco re-mapped last month at TD5 Alive and Gary really knows his stuff and will do the re-map to suit your car.

Blank off the EGR and buy a new foam air filter from Gary while your there.

The car goes so much better now my father-in-law nearly crashed when the car in front didn't pull off the roundabout fast enough.

I just cleaned the MAP Sensor on my 2000 TD5 with auto trans and 123K miles. It was pretty bunged up with heavy oily goo.

I am shocked at the transformation in performance! This TD5 is not only my first Land Rover but my first diesel of any kind so I thought the somewhat sluggish performance was normal.

If you are not sure if your TD5 is running at it's best, do yourself a favor and try this easy DIY!!

Here's a photo of the sensor before cleaning. Nasty.

Took me all of 30 minutes start to finish and it could not have been easier. Used white spirit and a cotton swab.

This gunge comes from the EGR valve. You should fit a blanking plate or remove the EGR valve completely to keep this clean:)

check out td5 alive, dont go down the piggyback chip route, ive had both now and currently run a stage 2+remap large intercooler, exhaust and hybrid turbo and never had a problem,td5 alive will check all sensors on engine before doing a remap and wont do it if there are any problems with it until they are sorted.
