TD5grumps

Hello Landy fans

I'm a TD5 owner for my sins, and to top it off I have an issue I want to share. While driving and accelerating my TD5 suddenly appears to go into limp mode, no fault lamps appear and if I turn off the engine and restart full power is restored. I assume that a fault is registering itself in the engine management system that resets when I restart.

Any thoughts

Hi, welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you’re hitting overboost limit. Loads on here about it, but in summary the ecu will cut fuelling if the boost exceeds certain limit, or airflow for that matter.

Boost is managed by wastegate on turbo. If you can drop a pressure gauge in great, or find someone local with nanocom... if you’re ever near Stafford, use mine. I think it’s about 1.3bar boost at cutout.

Easy fix, common issue is wastegate sticking, YouTube vids are out there showing fix, takes 20 mins tops. First off count the visible threads on the wastegate actuator on turbo, should be 11 - 13 visible, may just need adjustment.

All the best, Ade

Thanks, grateful for the info, I will look into it. I'll be sick as a parrot if it's that simple.

First and easiest option to eliminate is your MAF sensor, just unplug it and see if you feel an instant improvement .

Thanks all for the info.
Update. I did some checks MAF was ok, so turned my attention to the pipes connected to the modulator and wastegate. Took off the pipe between the mod and wastegate and found a small cylindrical piece of metal at the wastegate end that was blocking airflow to the wastegate(see pic). Removed and went for test run. Power greatly improved with no drop off.[GALLERY=][/GALLERY]

That is strange, maybe somebody’s idea of a tuning by restricting the boost air to the wastegate. Maybe a good idea to drop a gauge in to check boost pressure, or do as is generally advised and shorten wastegate 1 turn every few days until boost limit is hit (as you’ve had before) then back off a little. This ensures full boost is being achieved.
