my td5 starts to overheat when you are flat out but doesnt do it if its driven normally its a 1999 it has overheated before but that is due to me not cleaning the rad of the mud there is quite alot of bent fins on my rad could that be the problem i have no loss of fluids? it has become a lazy starter this week but could that be to do with the air filter i removed last weekend through getting wet my fault again snorkle wasnt properly sealed
 
its got standard viscous fan on it and seems fine, i will have to pull rad out and give it a proper clean will the bent fins not matter? also will not having a air filter in make it a lazy starter?
 
I agree ^^, the TD5 engine is hard to over heat. When it gets up to normal temp take the cap off the header tank ( with a towel and keep your head well back) it should just hiss as the presure escapes but if the coolent shoots 3 or 4 feet in the air. Im afraid its going to cost ya.
 
If it is HGF given that it only goes under load when on boost I'd guess that its a small hairline crack in the gasket not big enough to be noticed round town but when strained it shows

I think we need to support each other by trying to solve problems in the cheapest possible DYI way and by questioning based on our experience.

Maybe there is a HGF - but there are several other possible reasons too.
Dirty radiator is defiantly not unlikely.But lets ask a few questions?
Does the engine boil?, does it just increase slightly on the temp gauge? At what speed does it overheat?

In terms of the lazy start: Did you re-seat the filter & snorkel - did it help?
Does it smoke more than usually? If yes - what color? Does it feel like staring on less cylinders than normally? Is it a rough start? What do you mean by lazy? Does it turn slowly (battery issue?) It could just be a dead glow plug or a similar less-expensive issue.

Let's see if we can do better than suggesting a member to pull the head of his engine.

does it just increase slightly on the temp gauge? Lets assume it rises all the way up to the red when driven hard

At what speed does it overheat? Lets assume anything above 75

Did you re-seat the filter & snorkel - did it help? Wont make much of a difference really as the air loss is negligible

If yes - what color? Sometimes if its a hairline it wont smoke

Is it a rough start? What do you mean by lazy? If lazy/hard to start in the mornings/after a long run and been standing for a while could be coolant in the bores

Does it turn slowly (battery issue?) It could just be a dead glow plug or a similar less-expensive issue. It should still fire then run rough though

But Doctor - all of your statements are assuming it's a HGF. In case all your statements are correct .. then I would agree to most of it. BUT - this is NOT the case! We do not know all the things YOU are stating! I could also assume that he did not have any wheels on and due to this it's overheating when going 100 mph! My point is - WE DO NOT KNOW!

Cleaning the rad - He stated that ones he did not. So maybe he needs to do it again? Maybe it's six years ago?
What if it does smoke? Could indicate other things than HGF. And .. coolant in the bores? If you assume this could be initiated by the HGF - would it not be interesting to learn if there is a cloud of white smoke during start up?
I agree it does not need to boil - but would it not be nice to know if it does?
In terms of the glow plug - no I disagree - it should not continue to run rough. The glow plugs are only in service during start up and a few seconds after.

So I believe my question to you is really: Do you just wanna be the one who is right about the diagnosis (Told ya!) or do you wanna be the one who helps the member to find the root cause?

Given that I've just had all these symptoms less the hard start I'm going to go with both of the above ;)

Anyway test it and see, a home one he could do would be to release the pressure if any left overnight then from cold rag it for 5 mins if there's pressure in the coolant then you have a problem.

how bent are they are they restricting air flow through rad is rad hot all over

there will allways be pressure after a run ,hard starting through coolant leak gives locking when turning over ,with symptoms it could be start of poor hg but if it is its not enough yet to cause poor starting otherwise there would be coolant loss or if not to waterway poor running , you dont rag a cold engine, symptoms up to now would suggest inefficient cooling in rad ,symptoms may change

There will but I was thinking more like excessive pressure after a short run, I know you shouldn't rag a gold engine but as a test it might show something

Either way as I said my money would be on head gasket as I've jut had this minus the start problem, I wonder if his heaters work properly when it starts to overheat ?
 
heater blowing cold is a classic symptom ,but now your at uni think of all possiibilities as is good practice , i used to have to list all possibilities then cross off depending on symptoms when first learning been right isnt as good as knowing why :)

Well blocked cooling system, bad half opening stat not being able to keep up with added heat on boost or failing water pump would spring to mind
