Hey all. i know this may have been mentioned before but whats the better engine. especially in the current finacial crisis whats the most economical. Not that it matters my 300Tdi seems to drink heavily anyway. just curious really for next vehicle seeing as i now have the LR bug (no doctor required though)

It depends on your intentions really - I own a Defender for the love of its ruggedness and the reverberating clanking of the enging :) However, with the TDCI the engine is so much more quiet, and as with the TD5 an awful lot of the home mechanic has been removed from that model due to its advanced ECU and general electrical systems - Don't be fooled, it may look straighter and have some real wizardry gizmos but I will guarantee it will develop just as many random faults as earlier models. Personally I would stay with the 300TDI or Maybe consider popping a 200TDI in.

Always staying with 300tdi. I have Navara as day car but want rid quite frankly it's shocking. Don't get me wrong fairly refined etc. but should just stick with land rover so my thoughts at end of year would be newer defender or d3 but can't make my mind up. (Or my wife will make my mind up)) seeing as she will need to use. She also wants more brats so was thinking 110 route td5 prob 3-6 years old

Tell her to STFU or walk.:D

TD5 and worries about the electrics are largely unfounded/exaggerated and promoted by those with 200/300TDI's

I would assume that it's easy enough for you to do a search on here to look at the associated issues of TD5. It a comes down to personal choice and taste.

Yes n No.

I have a TD5 it's done about 160, 000 miles needed a new head  at 110, 000 was an utter pitta last year till I sorted out the dodgy immobiliser

Which incidentally didn't show up as a fault  it just cut out but then ran fine every time it was tested. I had to carry test gear with me to solve the problem

I also know despite having all the wading gear I dare not go wading too deep thanks to the throttle potentiometer

If and indeed when it dies despite a potential lower power the injin wil be replaced wiv a 200 tdi ;)

Having owned all, TD5....... had this one for 6 years ....no probs .... but acknowledge from experience it is the usual 'be lucky' ..!!

Judging by prices on Ebay and Autotrader, some of the late model, low mileage TD5s (especially if they have a few luxury extras) are going for premium prices - a lot more than some of the later TDCis . So it looks like they're getting quite collectable now. Somebody must like them. Of course, advertised prices aren't always necessarily what buyers are willing to pay, but it's interesting that the depreciation curve on TDCis seems to be steeper than on TD5s
