Hi,

I did a searcha nd struggled to find the right answers, so apologies if what I am askign is already covered. I the meantime...

...Is the 2.4 TDCi an improvement in terms or performance and economy over the Td5? In fact how does the 2.4 TDCi stand with economy?

Is the 6-speed gearbox worth going for a TDCi or would I be better off with the TD5 and well known R380 instead and fitting an overdrive?

Is the interior of the 2.4 TDCi really any better? Or are seats, etc. still in the same place and so no more 'ergonomically pleasing'? Is the heating/aircon really as big an improvement as LR would have you believe?

Had a TDCI out for a test drive about a year ago.

The inside is completly revamped, with new seats, interior linings, new dash etc. etc. (and a strange bump in the bonnet :) )

However - it does depend on what model you go for. The XS has everything, the county has a lot, and the basic model not much at all.

The proformance of the eninge seemed about the same as a TD5. The main difference is that it meets the new emmision regs, which means in places like London it will be exempt from the low emmisions zone (IF it comes into force)

As for economy it depends if you believe the figures from LZ or not???

Some people say the TD5 outdoes the TDCI slightly.
 
I've had my puma for 8 months now.
It has significantly more power than a TDi or TD5. It will cruise at 80 all day long.
The interior is improved but slightly more cramped if anything.
The 6 speed gearbox is no improvement, except maybe for motorway cruising.
The heating and ventilation are a huge improvement.
The fuel consumption is disappointing - 23mpg average over 4000 miles.
 
Been for a test drive. Want a 110 XS utility-wagon. But the only vehicle available was a base 90 hardtop. The engine was nice and torquey low-down, it revved and generally accounted itself well. I did find the gears notchy in 1st and 2nd, but they loosened up after a few miles. The steering could do with a quicker ratio as it seems to take a lot of arm work for simple manoeuvres. But I guess all Defenders are like this.

It did seem to pitch about a bit around town and the steering did not really inspire confidence above 60 mph (which equates to 2000 rpm). The seat was a little uncomfortable and there was quite a din from the rear.

BUT, I am hoping that the 110s longer wheel base will reduce the pitching a little and also make her feel a little more stable at speed. The second row of seats will mean no bulkhead behind the first ones, so that should mean I can recline the seat further. Lastly, the 90 hardtop had no headlining or carpets, so the 110 should again reduce the din with the fitment of these.

The 110 is much better than the 90 at speed .
I've fitted a set od MUD seat rails and a smaller steering wheel. It's nice and comfey now, even for a 6'4" fat bastid like me.

Oh and remember that a 110 has the turning circle of a supertanker.
Practice your 3, 5 and 7 point turns.

And rearwards visibility is diabolical - I fitted a cheap reversing camera from Maplin.
 
I have a td5 90 and have had tdci's quite a few times when i've had warranty work done, and was always glad to have the td5 back
i have found the td5 much better for towing and generaly better all around for my use (builder ) i found the tdci too revy and had to change down a lot more than the td5 towing and in normal driving.
hated the gearbox and interia, as for fuel consumtion found it very much more thirsty
i could have probably run to a early tdci when i was looking for a landie and i'm bloody glad i did'nt now
on a purely astetic point drive with the window open and sounds like yer driving a transit , or listen to that lovely 5 pot gurgle and roar :D

Yes. The engine is very quiet compared to the Td5, pulls better, cruises better. Only had mine for 1 month now, consumption is hovering around the 10l/100km mark, will prolly go down as the engine loosens up.

Yep, the 6-speed is smooth, and the clutch is light. These days I find myself stepping on the brakes more often because I end up going too fast!

Yep, the seats are same-ish, but the dash is better, the aircon works, the air vents are directional. Not sure what else they have done, but the Puma rides much quieter than the Td5.

To sum up the Puma, it is as much of an improvement on the Td5 as the Td5 was an improvement on the Tdi's :)

The TD5 engine is not what makes the car LEZ compliant or not. Its DVLA recorded body type that they go on. All commercials will need to meet LEZ emmission standards after October 2010 but non comercials dont at this time. My CSW was shown as LEZ non compliant but the body type wrongly showed "light utility" which TFL consider is a commercial vehicle on my V5. Wrote to the DVLA and got it changed to "estate" (they dont have a category for station wagon) and now TFL confirm that my motor will be LEZ compliant after Oct 2010. Also checked the on-line LEZ compliance checker and it confirms that my TD5 CSW is now recorded as LEZ compliant whereas before it was shown as non compliant after Oct 2010.

I agree with Bucky.
Due to my old motor fragging itself I've just fitted a brand new TD5 lump to my 90 and even though I'm taking it easy for a few miles it has oodles of power and torque compared to my old engine. I regularly tow a double horse box and a triple axle trailer loaded with upwards of 3 tons of firewood with no problems whatsoever. Sounds bloody lovely through my 3" bore straight through stainless exhaust as well.
 
Have to say its difficult to get a price out of a dealer for the Defender 110 XS utility. They keep coming back with a set of monthlys and deposit and keep tweaking them accordingly. But the actual price of the vehicle and extras such as 1st reg fee, tax, etc. keeps getting lost.

What is more annoying though is that you can't speak with the Sales Manager, he sits in an office with the salesman 10 mins later the salesman comes out with soem figures, if you query these hes back in the office for another 10 mins. After an hour I called it quits. If I didn't like Defenders so much, I'd of bee in a Hilux by now, certainly the 'sales experience' is not in anyway encouraging me to buy one!

Have to say your reply had me howling with laughter. I am very immune/patient with people's personailty defects nowadays, quite at odds with my previous short temper and complete lack of tolerance ;-)

Have managed to get myself a deal where I want it to be - just took perseverance. Anyway, if I go for it, I will be the owner of a 110 XS utility SW - oh and its got a 2.4 puma - will be an outcast?

I did drive a Td5 once and found it to be very good, really encouraged lazy driving, short shifting through the gears and bobbing along at little more than tick-over in 5th. Have to say i did like the 2.4 puma and reckon once they've loosened with some mileage on them they'll be a decent enough lump. I remember people moaning about the lack of bottom-end grunt on Td5's when they first came out, so just assume it takes the enthusiasts a while to get used to and embrace new things in the LR stable.

my local stealers are a bunch of no brainers :mad:when i had a water ingress into my under seat ecu box the salesman told me that the seat box was on the same level as the bottom of the door sills :doh: and dragged (well not literaly:D) me over to show me on a new 1 then had to back pedal and apoligize muchly :D:rolleyes:
