My old 300 tdi is not going to pass another MOT so I am looking for a new car. We are going to use hank (my big blue monster) as a donor for my hubby's 300 tdi (jennifer - green - she hulk)
So I am in 2 minds. Was originally looking for a td5 as I thought I needed 7 seats. However, plans for a family summer hol have now changed and I don't need 7. A friend of mine has a Range rover LPG conversion and swears by it.
I love the look of them and I have found a seemingly nice one in my price range. (obvs needs more recon).
However my hubby's boss (big into off roading, has 4 v. big kitted out L/R's) says they have loads of issues and are expensive to repair.
I'd like 3rd party opinions please.

If I were you I would drive both.
The TD5 D2 is going to seem extremely agricultural compared to a V8 P38, you can't compare the 2. Look at a V8 D2 on LPG?

I would personally avoid LPG and go and look at a DHSE P38.
More things to go wrong with the RR, however luxury motors for peanuts!
 
Try a P38 DSE with a superchip (if you are not towing anything) they are not fast but I get 25 - 28 mpg and if you choose carefully its a truly great car.
 
Had a D2 td5 and it was a disaster

Now have a P38, much older, much higher mileage, much nicer
 
The P38 will almost certainly cost a few grand on top to get straight. TD5 probably fairly safe if rust free. However, I'd have the P38 on LPG but make sure I budget an extra grand for it.
 
I am not convinced it is worth fitting lpg
Have had three lpg RR and Disco and haven't bothered fitting lpg to this one
 
More p38 cans of worms out there than td5. Having said that i wouldn't have an auto td5 again, and i only drive autos. I get enough gear changing at work
 
Get a 300tdi that will pass an mot.
Better than all the rest.

We share this opinion. Had RRC, P38 and L322 - went back to 300 for the simplicity.

Its your money though, so your call. I would say, if you go TD5 or P38, make sure you budget for proper diagnostics of your own.

Lpg isn't THAT much cheaper than petrol and you do lose some power and you get less miles per gallon so have to fill up more often. Up here lpg stations are not as common as petrol ones.
It does cost you a lot of room.
 
On LPG fill map my local LPG seller is currently 58ppl petrol is at 1:19 so half the cost again so looking tempting to run LPG once more
 
Yes is getting cheaper relatively again and when they ban diesels there could be another drive to promote lpg. It is a lot of money to fit lpg just now tho.
