Hello fellow members I'm a newb on the site just tranna gather a bit of info regarding the TD5 oil pump.... So my oil light has come on solid had it pressure tested and showing no oil pressure ... Took the sump off yesterday to get at the pump to find the bolt was loose.... Therefore I tried to remove it but no matter how much I slackened the bolt off it would not come out it just kept spinning and I couldn't physically pull it out with my fingers yet if I went a couple if turns the other way it would nip up enough to turn the sprocket and chain.... Is it possible that the bolt has sheared therefore unable to drive the sprocket hence no oil pressure??? Thanks guys any info would be great.

The lug that the bolt fastens into can shear, it's then only really held on by accidental pressure.... or the bolt/hole could be stripped due to it coming loose and being stressed.

i remember a recall for the bolt coming loose on the td5 oil pump they said it just needed locktite

Thanks for the reply guys....I have read about the recalls on these models but not sure if I would qualify having not owned the car from new/full service record etc not really sure to be honest....if I could get the bolt out I could see if it has sheared but no matter how much I loosen it.. It doesn't appear to screw out! Thinkin of getting a new pump assembly and replacing.... Hopefully I havnt killed the engine brought it back from the garage which is only 50m away from my house.... I've dropped the oil out and checked for metal particles which all looks fine and also wiped inside of the sump with a black rag to check for metal n that looks ok..... I havnt actually managed to get the sump out yet because 2 bolts have rounded off on the strengthner bar at the back of the sump! Would there be any other reason why there would be no oil pressure other than the pump??? Sorry for the essay.... Just trying to put the full picture across!!!! Thanks.

just had a look in me service book and it says
campaign no-a275-handbrake recall on-22.4.02
" -a263-slabs ecu " "
" -a149-replace clips " 24.8.05
" -a148-cover " -21.7.04
I`m hoping mines bin dun now:eek:

Think since you've found the sprocket loose you can safely say that's the root cause of the pressure problem.

Problem is, by the time the pressure has gone most of the damage is usually done.

Does it turn over OK by hand?

Think no 5 is furthest from pump so I'd be inclined to inspect the mains, journal, and big end there before going any further.

Also whip off the rocker cover and see what the cam/followers/rockers look like.

Turbo bearings also cook off fast with no oil pressure.

Thanks..... I think that's that's beyond my mechanical experience lol!!!! I would say that it would turn over with the key if I tried it but don't really want to.... It was running perfect when I brought it back from the garage no knocking or strange noises but since the lights been on I daren't start it back up......could u explain to me how I could turn it over by hand??? As this seems a much safer option.... Would this to find out whether it's seized??? Failing that it will have to go to my local specialist for him to look at it which obviously means money..... Vast amounts of the stuff!!! Wondering whether just to spend £100 on a new assembly to then see if it starts.... The light goes off then do another pressure test on it. Cheers guys.

Remove viscous fan, put big spanner on crank damper bolt, turn engine over... (whilst not in gear!)

TBH it sounds like you need to get a garage or someone with experience to look at it. I wouldn't just throw another pump on and hope for the best. Besides, if you can't get the bolt out, how are you going to remove the chain/sprocket in order to get the pump out?

Yeah that's a point........think am just gunna get it lifted to a garage then hopefully they can just tell me the extent of the damage and if it's too far gone to repair. Might av a bash at trying to turn it over by hand and av one last bash at getting the bolt out to see if it's damaged. Thanks for the info mate.

Sorry bennehboy...... Do you mean turn engine over with ignition with the spanner on the bolt??? Or just turn the crank bolt with the spanner??? I'm orate wen it comes to brakes pads fan belts starter motors etc lol but this seems to be beyond me!

Turn the crank damper bolt with spanner, strongly advise against running the engine or cranking it on the starter with a busted oil pump... and whatever you do, DO NOT crank on ignition with a spanner on the end of the crank damper bolt!

Haha thanks mate.... I was just unsure of what you meant...I didn't think u meant turning the engine over with the key as this could be catastrophic for ME and the Landy!!! Cheers bud.... Understood

He means turning the engine over with the ignition OFF. Don't start it with the spanner on!
Griff

Thanks mate yeah!!! It did cross my mind that doing it with the ignition could finish me n the disco off lol..... In the meantime I have been back underneath to try and get the bolt out.... Not having none of it no matter how long I lay there trying to undo it with the ratchet! But soon as I ratchet clockwise it tightens up enough to see the crank turn (I'm assuming it is the crank I can see turning!) it's going to a bloke I know who specialises on landys in next few days so I will post whether the TD5 is dead or alive! Hopefully seeing the crank turn ....it's not seized up! Wish me luck guys

Quick update on situation chaps.... Had it lifted to garage a bloke I know who works only on land rovers told me that the gears or teeth (can't remember exactly) had sheared inside the pump..... He also told me that he'd inspected the bottom end of the engine and turned it over by hand and all seems good.... Now I'm not sure wot to do now as he has quoted me £495 which is for a brand new pump assembly, new oil, filters, sump gasket etc and labour.... Should I have the work done and hope there is no damage to the engine/turbo etc .... That is the question??????

Ask him if he checked a big end, if the big ends are OK would be worth going for it

Would he be able to check it after removing the oil pump assembly because if it requires other parts to be removed I doubt he will have done that as it is all extra work..... If you can get to check it by just removing the assembly then I would think he would have done it but al ask him anyway. What would happen if the big ends were knacked? Would it just not turn over or run or sound like an absolute bag of spanners!!!! Thanks mate.

Yes, as soon as you have the oil pump/stiffener plate off you can pull one of the big end caps off.

If that big end was shot then it would probably be new engine time, it would basically show that the oil starvation caused damage, and if the big ends are gone, the rest would likely be worse.

Thanks mate..... Can I just ask whether the engine would run? Or what would be the symptoms of big end failure other than a visual inspection just out of curiosity? I am gunna ring him today and ask him as I think he's still waiting for the new pump assembly to arrive.....Is it just as simple as pulling a cap off to inspect it?
