Erm, the story so far.....

I've just bought the car (2weeks ago tomorrow), while looking for a td5, I went to view one a year newer (mine's 2000) and it ran really smooth and quiet but had a nasty noise from the gear box and nearly 200000 miles on clock.

Mine's done 74k now, didn't come with any service history but seemed to have been looked after, it didn't run quite as nicely but I hoped a good service would help. The oil was about 1/4" too far up the dipstick but no smell of diesel so I changed it and am keeping a close eye on the level. I've already bought new injector seals (both) and will fit asap. I've also adjusted the injectors and changed all filters apart from fuel (maybe tomorrow).

It just doesn't seem as "sweet" as I think it could be so I thought I'd ask the question - any ideas what's up?

Starts lovely, doesn't misfire (except below), no unusual smoke.

Couple of things I've noticed though;

Coughs and struggles if I gently move it with no throttle in first or reverse- for a 2t or more car, my guess is that's normal.

Has a bit of "diesel knock" under acceleration when cold

When turbo's working hard, seems to "Woosh" - I've yet to look for leaks, but wondered if this was normal as it accelerates ok and no black smoke. Sounds like rushing air.

Any ideas?

NO 2 LANDYS ARE THE SAME

i just think your trying to compare 2 motors too much

It's a possibility obviously, I worked as a mechanic for seven years and like to think I can kind of sense when something's amiss but I'm not so arrogant as to claim to always be right.

I'll finish the list of things to do anyway and maybe I'll just happen to get it running that bit nicer somewhere along the line. The priority's the timing chain, I always change the chain / belt as soon as I can even if the previous owner claims to have had it done - perhaps the timing's slightly out, who knows!

Thankyou anyway, always worth bearing the mental side of things in mind.

As a side note, I've got the bits I need to get the cdl working (off a d1) any idea if the plate on the transmission tunnel is interchangeable? Bit more professional than just making the hole for the transfer lever bigger.

I think you need to do a bit more research on how a td5 works, as the timing chain aint a service item, its there for the life of the engine,
and timing is controlled by the ecu,
You should be able to move it without any throttle from a standstill without a missfire, have you checked the injector loom to the ecu for oil contamination.

This wont explain the poor running but as for the turbo woosh. Check all your boost pipes are without holes, the intercooler for holes and the the small vac pipes are connected to the actuator solinoid as i found one of mine had come off the other day.
