afternoon all!

i have tried searching the forum but nothing found, so hopefully somone can give me an answer.

When i turn my engine off on the td5 disco i now notice a slowing whine,
as though the fan is still spinning and slowing down graduly

I've never noticed it until yesterday, however i've only driven the disco since december (colder weather)

none of the fans or moving parts that are visible are still spinning, is it the turbo winding down or something?

sorry i'm not amazingly mechanically minded! especially with turbos

also, does anyone know if you need to remove the electric fan to fit a full size intercooler? my fan died this morning, bearing i think, but td5 alive are fitting an intercooler thurs so dont wanna cost for one if its going to get removed!?

Cheers

Hi Dan and welcome. To answer your issues:

1. The noise you are hearing is the engine rotor filter running down - perfectly normal;

2. Re fans - the main engine cooling fan is a viscous one driven by the engine, not electric.

The electric fan just in front of the radiator and viewable through the grill is the aircon condenser fan. It sits in front of the condenser which itself is in front of the intercooler.

thank you one and all

Biglad, in re to the above, i've taken the leccy fan off - its must be the bearing, its siezed solid! so its off now, i will get a new one tomorrow, what i didnt want to do was cost out for one if td5 alive are gunna take it off to fit the new larger intercooler as i could imagine they're a fair few £ notes! i'll call em in the morning to double check but looks like a new one will be needed!
my aircon seems to work fine without it? should i not be using the aircon without the fan? i have no idea what so ever how the aircon fan works!

on the plus side i've had the plastic cover off the engine today and no leaks which is always nice to see!

maybe i will make it to td5 alive for me re-map after all :)

The electric fan is 100% needed for the aircon condensor, if not the pressure in the system could get to high and it will stop working, or worse still spring a leak.

The engine ECU also uses the electric fan if more cooling is needed and if an overheat situation is sensed.

Only an issue when car is not moving, but as urban say's don't use it at all untill new fan fitted you will blow a pipe/hose if you forget to turn it off when stationary.

cheers guys,
does anyone know if i could fit a kenlowe fan in its place and still fit a larger intercooler in? (i have no idea where the new intercooler will sit, possibly behind the aircon condenser?) td5 alive are fitting a larger intercooloer on thursday and the fan is near impossible to source. all my local landy specialists have never replaced one and on speaking to landrover to order it in their a £178 plus vat on a back order of 6 months!

obviously i've stopped using the aircon for now! but want it working again asap due to this heat wave we're having!

Thanks again

Dan
