Hi all,
After wanting a Discovery for years, I finally took the plunge, approx 1 month ago, and went for a 2003 D2 td5.

Apart from the temperamental key fob, it has been running well until a couple of weekends ago, when we took the 5 kids away for the weekend, 70 miles from home. It conked out on the Saturday evening, a few miles from our accommodation, and it took ½ an hour of head scratching, and considering calling a mechanic, before it started again. Temperature normal, no lights in the dash.

When it had cooled a while, I noticed the coolant level was low, so I thought I'll top it up the next morning, when it was totally cold.

Next morning, when "topping up", as I thought, the coolant, we noticed that it was running out, almost as quickly as it was going in. I couldn't see where it was coming from, so called the RAC out, who said he couldn't fix it, and he towed us home.

We were looking round it, and the attached video is what we found. I'm hoping it isn't TOO cruel a welcome to the Discovery owners club!

Has anyone any advice, or suggestions as to what it might be?

so your water pump is driven by the power steering pump so as you look at it the power steering pump is on the front of the engine driven by the drive belt, and the water pump is fitted behind it as you can seein the videos not easy to get at, but is the fluid in your video looks as it was pink, the water may be mixing with the power steering oil as it normaly red, so make sure the power steering pump is not leaking as well as you may need to replace both

Frostythor, the little stream of liquid running out looks more orange than pink, the light is maybe affecting how it looks in the video.

Here is another angle, not sure how useful it will be for identifying the source.

I really hope you are right, I was visualising worst case scenarios like a crack in the block.

well it in the right area to be the water pump, directly opposite the expention tank, the other item it maybe not sure is a water jacket blanking plug rusted out

Firstly check the long hose which goes to the water pump. I though mine was the pump so bought one and then discovered it was the hose. I have a brand new genuine pump still in box if you do need one.

It still looks like the area of the water pump. When the bearing in the water pump goes it leaks through a drain hole underneath. You need to look harder and from underneath and from the nearside to ascertain exactly where it is coming from.

I'm looking around trying to find the bits and pieces to complete this job, and Ebay is asking for the engine variant (see screenshot below).
I haven't found this info anywhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction? 100kw 136HP or 102kw 139HP

I have got the oil filter off, to allow access to the rotor filter housing, but I haven't managed to get one of the two 10mm bolts out of the top of the housing. I'm thinking I might need to get the whole housing right out, to remove it.

I am wondering now, if there is anything else I would regret not doing, when I am this far? Obviously oil, and oil filter, is the rotor filter due replacing (if I can get it out :D), water pump. If the hoses don't look too bad, could I conceivably get another spell out of them?

I can't afford to do everything I'd like to, just now, but I have to be sensible.

I've seen that distinction made several times when ordering parts and quite frankly don't know what it means. What I can confirm is that mine is a 1999MY 10P engine with a manual gearbox and the original papers from LR state that it delivers a maximum power of 102kW @ 4,200 rev/min. Could the 100kW version be a reference to the same engine fitted with an auto gearbox ?

If yours is a 2003 as you say, it almost certainly is the 15P engine. You can confirm this by seeing if it has the EGR cooler across the front of the engine and the later FPR with the return from the cylinder head. The actual hp doesn't matter, apart from some minor differences they are basically the same engine. As regards the rotor filter housing, because some people overtighten the two small but long bolts holding the cover on, it strips the threads in the alloy housing. The usual fix is to drill all the way through the housing and put a longer bolt and nut on it. This maybe why you cannot undo it. They are only supposed to be 7ftlbs torque IIRC, as there is a rubber 'O' ring seal for the cover. For the water pump, here is the bay link for the QH version, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/273379301323?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

Ok... I made some progress... until one of the 8mm bolts on the water pump cover sheared off. The 3rd one.

I am waiting for the new water pump to be delivered, and I am wondering if the holes in the cover are threaded, and therefore I would need to get it the whole unit right out, to get access to the stud, or if the cover holes are unthreaded (I think they are from the photos on Frostythor's link) might it be worth taking the other two bolts out, and trying to remove the cover off the broken stud? Or, do I need to research how to get the block that the pump is in, right out?

Never a dull moment :(
