I get about 30-32 in my 90 but it has a 1:2 disco transfer box, de cat pipe and the egr is removed. You'll get slightly worse MPG figures in the winter as the diesel is slightly different blend (so I have been told) to help it in sub zero temperatures.

My td5 90 used to do 28-29 on longish runs with general grabber at2's.

Now my commute is less, but on twisty small roads, and only really getting up to temp halfway there, and running fairly aggressive stt pros 235/85 r16's its dropped down to 25-26.

Supermarket diesel doesn't make the blindest bit of difference in my opinion, one overtake, or a trailer one day of the week cancel anything like that out, and tescos is en-route anyway! :)

I have no idea of my mpg because I fill out a tank without a flow meter and don’t trust fuel gauge. I normally get to 240ish Miles then fill up.

How many miles do others get out of a tank?

The other week doing 30min mway journeys at 70 i managed a whopping 17mpg o_O Strange though as the same journey a few weeks before i was averaging 25mpg

Really not good! lol Disco tx box is on the cards!

I have noticed over the past few weeks I get much better MPG from BP fuel than others.

Same journey I get around 22 - 24mpg with BP
18 - 20mpg with Texaco & Shell

Careful with a D2 transfer box without a tune if fuel economy is your goal. I have found the opposite with consumption going up. It seems the vehicle has to work that much harder to achieve the same speed, even if the revs are lower.
I used to be able to get 480-500miles out of my 110 tank consistently with motorway driving, now its a lot more like 390-420.

However, for me, the drivability and quieter motorway driving outweighs the fuel penalty. I would imagine a tuned engine would 'pull' the box better, but that might be open to debate. Next on my list, would have done it a long time ago if it didn't ramp up insurance premiums so much !

I also have a 1.2 box and often wonder why I bothered!

When I first got a TD5 I felt like it was screaming at anything above 50, to the point where I was checking I was in 5th, the disco box cut the revs and made motorway speeds more bearable. I often tow a car trailer with a Land Rover on the back and don't have any problems with the gearing.

Just wondering, have you guys taken the engine cooling fan off your TD5s?
I think that’s the single most important thing i had done to improve mpg.
I had the engine re-mapped from new (2005] by main dealer. Had straight through front exhaust pipe fitted, got rid of EGR, and had Disco gears in the transfer box. 35mpg on a run, if i keep to 60ish mph.
Done 165K now without problems.

On Motorway cruising the P38 4.6 tells me with a straight-face that it is doing 22MPG.
Not bad for a heavy old bus. Around town its about 9 or 10 if I am lucky.
On the M25 its about 6 or 7.

No, my engine can is still in situ. If the viscous unit is working properly then it shouldn't make any difference at motorway speeds, trouble is most older units seize up and they become a fixed fan. I'd only remove my fan if I had a reliable replacement fitted, a Kenlowe or the like.

I find it’s quieter and warms up much sooner in winter, but the needle never moves from where it was when the fan was fitted. Absolutley sure my TD5 doesn’t need a fan in UK.

maybe you dont tow or 4wd
many gurus ask me why i have a few extra gauges installed
dont trust the the stock coolant needle they dont move even when the engine coolant is on borderline of over heating
if your viscous fan is working correctly you should only hear it kick in when its needed
when its not needed you should be able to stop the fan with a rolled up news paper with some slight resistance holding it back ..you have allready said its quieter with it removed doesn't this tell you something

The gauge is climbing to the middle at 70*C and stays there up to 120*C then it goes to red zone so you can drive it many miles with serenity without a fan at 115*C without even knowing it ... at that temperature the underhood temp is higher especially unvented cos the viscous fan has a cooling effect for that too by blowing air around the engine so the fusebox, connectors,.and wiring are suffering too on a long run .... it's simply not a good ideea to drive it without that fan IMO

I had a long motorway trip, I took the opportunity to perform the calculation, i got 31MPG! not bad i thought!

thats a 2004 TD5 defender 90
stage 1 remap by alive
erg delete
centre silencer removed (with cat still)
standard gearing averaging 60mph

Occasional 4WD.
Towed 24ft twin axle caravan 120 miles many times, winter and summer.
Now over 166K so I’m happy to run without a fan.
When I originally removed fan I carried it round with me just in case. After 12 months didn’t bother carrying it.
Regards,Ken.
