I think I get around 22-25mpg but not urban driving, I'm out in the country. Less when towing obviously.

The autobox TD5 in std trim is imo, much heavier on fuel than the manual version.
If you look at official mpg figures you'll see the combined figure for the auto is approx 26 whereas the same figure the manual box car is 30mpg but I reckon the difference is even greater.
With the autobox car in std trim the TC (torque converter) is not at all ideal and allows the engine to rev quite highly, like a manual box car with a slipping clutch.
With an Ashcrofts HD TC this tendency is much reduced and consequently mpg improves.
But before doing anything else, whenever I get another Disco the very first thing I do is to change all fluids and filters - to establish a baseline for future servicing.
The other thing worth checking is the condition of the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor on the inlet manifold. These are VERY often caked in a tar-like substance rendering their effective operation much reduced. Clean with aerosol brake and clutch cleaner.

My TD5 auto does have the HD TC from ashcrofts fitted.Around town(very heavy traffic-20 minutes to do 2 miles)I average about 100 miles for 25lts of fuel,but on a run at motorway speed limit I get at least 150 miles per 25 lts of fuel.If i backed off to 55-60 where she seems to almost do no work I am sure the figures might be even better.

If you do go the re map route,google Dynachip,Mike knows his stuff regarding TD5 remaps.He will do this at your home/place of work.
Yup regular servicing,and I do drive it,love the acceleration-forgot to say it is also chipped by Mike at dynachip

Hi Sulli most D2 auto owners who have done the HD torque converter modification find that solves all the issues in one go.

Sadly it's not just a matter of plugging in a PC and playing with the transmission ECU.

+++ the Light Foot.
I have had a leaking exhaust manifold gasket for a while, and keeping that quiet means I have been using a very light foot.
