The gauge can be a bit misleading !.

If I fill mine right up I get 320 miles to the half way mark but the light usually comes on around 500. ( = 27 mpg ).

Td5 auto, 105k remapped de-egr'd I filled her up to the brim did exactly 315 miles to about half way mark on gauge, down to devon at 65mph a few hills but then towed home the caravan 1800kg, light came on at 445 miles, refilled at 470 as didnt want to push my luck, overall pleased with mpg, i try to drive carefully but the remap power is too much for me sometimes and im heavy footed, so much so im now replacing my manifold gasket.
 
I get between 530 and 580miles out of a completely full tank. Not a clue what that equates to in mpg, all I know is that I filled up on pay day (27th August and didn't fill up again until the following pay day (28th September), so over 4 weeks. My Fourtrack used to need filling up about every 6 days, OK, so a smaller tank, but only by about half. The fuel economy on the Disco is one thing I really do love about it - plus it's quieter (can actually hear the radio), comfier and higher up.
 
Not worked out my mpg yet, picked up my TD5 October 1st and filled the tank (£98). Just coming up to 600 miles and no 'low fuel' warning light showing yet, I would say thats pretty good :)

No, I'd say the bulb in your fuel warning light has blown...:D
 
The key to good Disco TD5 mpg is longer runs at no more than 60 mph !.

A well maintained motoway/A road cruising TD5 manual is definately capable of 32+ mpg.

My last tank was 150 miles on dual carridgeway, 80 miles towing my 200 tdi on country lanes and the rest the usual short trips.

The point I,m making is that, in that tank, I only did 150 miles cruising at 60 mph, but this " run " improved my mpg from 27 to 28.

As I,ve said before, I think that the Discovery TD5 does really well, considering what it is.

My wife,s freind has an automatic Ford Focus which only does 25 mpg round town.

well impressed with mine, compared to my 300tdi 90 that i had. also im getting more in disco now shes running 50/50 veg oil/derv

Have to agree, mine does better on a run at 60, with the van on the back, than it does on the short cross country trips that make up my daily commute.

Just done a trip south via Mike @ Dynachip, ( only a 40 mile detour) & had a standard re-map. Necked it before I left & necked it 20 miles after the re-map, turned out @ 32mpg. Cruised down not exceeding 3000 rpm. Can't honestly say what I get @ the moment, as the increase in driveability is awesome ! Couldn't do 30 mph in 5th before, had to change down to 4th.
Now it's smooth in 5th & when you get to 1500 revs - Geronimo!
 
My TD5 Disco is very good on fuel.

My best has been a run from here to Woking, 417 miles on 45 litres of diesel, full tank to full tank - still showing way over half a tank after 417 miles.

So it was doing over FORTY miles per gallon, but that was a 'bust your brains' drive on cruise control at 56 mph all the way ... and the ONLY stop I made was to pay the toll on M6Toll.

I do the Woking return trip once or twice a year, and it always seems to use about half a tank each way.

Good engine, but completely gutless from a standing start, which is bloody dangerous on a busy roundabout, especially with a trailer on. The handbook says to use low range when starting off when pulling a trailer, and tries to explain how to double-de-clutch from LO to HI ranges on the move! KERUNCH!

i got 22.5 out of my last (first tank) that was mostly very short commutes and a couple of 30 mile journeys. I keep to around 60 on motorways/dual carriageways and the speed limit elsewhere. I am still learning how to drive the negine as it is totally gutless under 1700? revs I need to find a power/torque graph for it to figure out how many revs to dial in ... it's an auto also btw..
 
I have a 1999 TD5 Auto and i thought i did well at about 35 to a gallon but last weekend i had to go down to south coast from here north of Stratford on Avon..Then i worked it out no it don't do 35+ mpg it does 32mpg with cruse set at 65mph..I have had it about 3 years but in that time Ive never filled it to the top,Always half full tank as i don't want to carry the extra weight,I never carry any thing heavy in it only tow stropes,I would like to fit a winch bumper but toooooooooo heavy ..

Ah yes, automatic and 65 mph.

Automatics do use more fuel than manual, and 65 mph is too fast for a Disco which has the aerodynamic properties of a brick with worn edges.

Air Drag increases HUGELY between 55 and 65 mph, in fact by the ratio of about 30 : 42 in fact, so the drag at 65 is more than a third more than the drag at 55. That's where the extra fuel goes - overcoming AIR RESISTANCE.

Have you had any problems with running a TD5 on veg oil or had to do anything like heating the fuel before it get's to the engine.
I heard that the TD5 engine wouldn't run on veg oil because of the viscousity being higher.

TD5 is fine on veg oil, but best keep it no more than a 50% mix so the viscosity doesn't go up too much.

Once it is running, the fuel heats up a LOT, and all will be fine. It is COLD STARTING and the first ten minutes of driving that might cause problems.

Otherwise, TD5 engines run beautifully on BioDiesel and Veg.

Just checked my 04 Disco TD5 again Now has 72K on the clock. Commuting to and from work, 10 miles each way, I got 30.5 mpg. Not at all bad!

I have an 04 td5 with 76k on the clock serviced fully every 6k miles and still only get around 25 mainly long ish journeys 30 miles at a time at 70 mph and a little town driving but only maybe 20% in miles terms.

Relax .... back off a bit, 70 is way too fast for a Disco to be economic.

The DRAG factor at 50 mph is about 25 (I was low last time - sorry)
The DRAG factor at 55 mph is about 30
The DRAG factor at 60 mph is about 36
The DRAG factor at 70 mph is about 50

Driving along happily between 55 and 60 mph seems to be best.

I have to agree with the last post. I've obsessively logged every litre that's gone into my TD5 (2001 ES auto) since I bought it just over a year ago and the overall MPG is a smidgeon over 22 (over 8,500 miles). That's a combination of very short local journeys, solo motorway trips with cruise control on 70 mph and towing a 1400 Kg caravan with cruise control on 60 mph. The best I have achieved was a motorway journey towing a motorbike trailer at 60 mph where I got 27 mpg.

It's costing me 23 p / mile which is about 2p / mile more than the V8 3.5i running on LPG which it replaced (figure calculated over the 75,000 miles I ran it for). That was driven in a similar manner but given the increase in fuel prices over the years it's broadly comparable.

I'm sometimes rather envious of the figures people quote but feel some may not have been very rigorously calculated. Anyway, life's too short to bimble along at 55 mph.

Sure, it seems like that, but if you get a little older, leave a little sooner, drive a little slower, and pay attention, and NEVER drive "frantic", you will find your mpg shoots up!

Try it for a month ... cruise 56 like the trucks, drive gently, no heavy acceleration or braking if you can avoid it, look well ahead, and RELAX while paying attention to all the frantic nutters whizzing past wasting fuel and getting nowhere much in the process.
