I got the steering wheel switch off ebay for £15 and the binnacle from LR for £8.

just a note on the cruise control...

We passed over the Milau Viaduct on our trip and this was the only time the engine ever gave me cause to stop, listen and question what was going on...

the cruise on the TD5 seems crude in comparison to my other cars... the rhythmic pulsating on long decents as it tries to engine brake to maintain speed I felt on the ascent over the viaduct. Although it allows you to use the throttle pedal for acceleration, if you hold the throttle just over it's programmed speed it seems to get confused and starts it's pulsating... alarming until I sussed it and killed the cruise at the binnacle switch and went over to manual control.

The idea is the let you deck the GO PEDAL for up to 30 seconds for overtaking.

If you take your foot off the pedal inside 30 seconds it will revert to the set speed. If you keep your foot down longer than that it cancels cruise.

Fair enough I suppose.

Cruise does NOT disable the throttle pedal, so if you JUST have enough throttle pedal on to beat cruise, it will "hunt" a bit because no person can match the accuracy of its ability to sense small speed changes quickly and adjust for them.

It is probably the most sensitive CRUISE I have ever used.

Cruise and TomTom .... and all I need now is automatic steering!

Ahh figured it out! i read other articles in the forum!! i wish i'd thought of that earlier!

Once you've blocked it and / or binned it you will certainly wish you had done it long long ago .....

Don't waste any time - dump it.

yep -get it done NOWWW!!

been driving mine for 2/3 weeks since I did the EGR & it's suprising how much more power I've got - really notice it at roundabouts & junctions & accelerating in 3rd & 4th gear.

BB, dont know how many miles yours has done... but consider flushing the intercooler as part of your new breath of fresh air..!!

done just over 90K - 2001 TD5 manual

it's on the list to do - along with cleaning out inlet manifold - did you do yours ?, if so how long did it take & what did you use - neat petrol ? - looks a bit fiddley to get at - remove headlights etc?

drives great now - almost can't believe its a diesel

Ah... i punctured my rad on the top of the wayfarer so it was all coming apart anyway to intsall a new one.

however, simply put.. you remove the fan, the headlight surrounds, the grill, the horns, this will get you to the rad brackets. lift the main cooling rad forward out of the way (no need to disconnect the plumbing, but needs fan gone!) and ease out the intercooler from between the main rad and the air con rad...

i soaked it in neat petrol over night and the petrol came out black...

It did make a difference, but marginal compared to the stage 1 ECU chip tune i'd had done a few weeks before...:D :D

I would say it's worth doing... but it'll take you a while to get it out, but once you do and you see what kinda coating all that EGR molasses has done to the inlet you'll be glad you did it!!

PS: mines just clocking up 86k EGR blanked at 82

That is awful even on short journeys.

Block the EGR as soon as possible, and check it out again. Just blocking the EGR (fit the plate at the exhaust manifold end) will IMPROVE your fuel consumption by about 20%, so 20 mpg would become an instant 24 - 25.

Sounds interesting, I'll have a go at this myself if someone can give a little bit more detail. Just so I don't go removing somthing I need by mistake.
One question; After doing this, don't you get engine management lights etc lighting on yer dash?

Cheers.

do yourself a favor and locate the two bolts on the exhaust manifold... give them plenty of WD40... then get on ebay and order your £5 blanking plate..

plenty of info on blanking an EGR... search and you will find

No warning lights to worry about... just extra power and better fuel econamy!!!

get a blanking plate kit from here

Landrover Discovery 2 TD5 EGR Blanking Plate Full Kit - eBay Land Rover, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 10-Oct-07 22:47:46 BST)

& see this thread for how to do it

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/td...itting-my-tips-41368.html?highlight=egr+plate

best £7 & 30 mins you'll ever spend

no - no light on dash - you're not removing anything - just blanking off the flow of dirty exhaust gases into the inlet manifold

Thanks, I'm on it.

this is where you insert the blanking plate (circled)

between the front of the exhaust manifold & the pipe that leads to the EGR valve

three most important things are WD40, WD40 & WD40 :D - soak the bolts for a few days before you do it

2003 Discovery TD5A.

From the 2003 face-lift Disco with the TD5A engine, there are two emmission modulators, EGR and ILT. The ILT or inlet throttle valve is a butterfly valve that sits under the EGR valve body, in the inlet manifold.

It works in conjunction with the EGR valve and closes off the engine inlet manifold fresh air intake from the intercooler when the EGR valve is operated. It does this to cause a higher vacuum in the inlet manifold so more EGR gas in drawn into the engine.

I would guess that this valve should also be disabled when fitting an EGR blanking plate, or the ILT valve will still operate when the call for EGR is made, so closing the intercooler air supply to the engine inlet manifold, and thus throttling the engine's air supply ?

Good question.
Its the extra bits on mine (2004 TD5) thats stopping me fitting the blanking plate and so I would be very interested on hearing advice on this..

My 2002 pre facelift has the EU3 EGR system with ILT also.
I've done the EGR plate thing and unplugged the power connector on the ILT actuator.

I've read that all this EGR stuff is removed on the latest Discovery II sold in SA. Does anyone have LR part details for the factory mod?
