Firstly, apologise if this has already been covered.
The good ladies pride & joy, Disco2 Td5, has been pretty much disaster free for ages. Most snags we can figure out & fix. This one has got me stumped....
This morning, started as usual & set off. !00 yds later it stopped. Just as if the key had been turned off. tried a lock & unlock to see if that would reset something, no good. Cant tow, its auto. Turn key on & fuel pump can be heard running, engine turns ok when the key is opperated but after a second or two, the m & s lights flash together.....
Looked at the fuse list & nowt there seemed to be real relivant....
Any guru`s got any ideas, advice etc?
Many thanks in advance all!.

Sounds like it may be battery related ...has it been stood at all ?

check the battery clamps and the main earth...

Did you look to see if the alarm LED is flashing or not or on continuously ?

Get your hands on a hawkeye or someone with one, plug it in and see what codes there are ...

Battery is all nice & tight..... tighter than my boss & that takes some doing believe me!
Alarm LED flashes then goes off once the key button is pressed.
Mighty odd.....

The voltage is important though, check voltage on the battery while cranking, if it drops below 10V the battery is weak, might be a problem with the charging system if it is, if the voltage is good check fuses F1, F12, engine bay and F24 interior fusebox, if these are good too see if the crank sensor is well plugged ... if no joy you really need a tester on it

When my fuel pump failed it stopped the engine dead but could still be heard buzzing as if fine. But after I changed the ckp to no avail it was in fact the fuel pump. I even changed injector loom at the same time.

Does anyone know what the two lights (m and s) being on at the same time mean as my 51 plate Disco 2 did that the other day. Turned engine on and off and sorted it but as its the gearbox I'm a bit worried.

Many thanks Mji, You are correct with towing an auto, BUT, the damned thing cant bump start to rule out battery loss as a manual can.
Never thought about a fuel pump prob Gregja, will defo have a look at that..... Anyone got an idea of fuel pressure from the tank pump?.
Checked fuses sierrafery, no change so its wetsuit on & dive underneath today!
Thanks all for the help thus far.

I'd be more likely to look at the crankshaft sensor first, fuel pumps tend to mess around a bit before failing completely, while the CKP sensor is a dead stop situation, no limp mode, nothing.

OK....
Took fuel pipe off..... & had a diesel bath. Checked the crank sensor & all good there. Buggah! Plugged in `the machine` & got a driver demand fault.... No idea.... Looked at throttle pedal voltages & all were in the peramiters. did a load of other checks & still kept getting driver demand fault.
Cleared the fault & the damned thing burst into life... Good news indeed! However.... What was the problem? what caused the problem? how to stop the problem re-occuring. As a side note, i hope the cure is fixable from anywhere but underneath...... While looking at the crank sensor, i had a Kelpie licking me to death & one of the farm cats sitting on my head... On top of that, my pal was in tears with laughter & the water running down hill decided that the quickest way to the drain was straight down my neck & out of my trouser leg bottoms. Oh the joys!

Right then!
Checked the loom section, all good. Connectors, ditto. Cleared the fault & the damned thing started!..... All good so far. Got a new pedal & sensor to fit. Good job there is a holiday weekend coming.
Many thanks all for your collective invaluable help & advice. :crazy_driver:

Hope you have found the problem and its sorted.I had almost the same problem a short time ago for no reason it would just stop sometimes it would be ok for 2 or 3 days another time it could do be after 1/4 mile after trying all the usual stuff-Fuel pump, injector loom-All sensers it was finaly traced to the injector seals and washers its not a big job to replace them and they dont cost a arm and a leg dont ask me how faulty washers and seals could stop the engine dead but I have now covered 2000 miles and alls fine .I hope you have fixed your problem but if it starts again maybe its worth a try

Did injector seals a few months ago. But have now got a real odd fuel problem. Have posted details & am seeing what ideas are put forwards. Fuel pump in tank real noisy but car still works. Last night, no power but still going but cant hear pump.... Mighty odd. Guess i need to try a new pump.
