I have just received the replacment hinges from rj landrovers, these are the TD5 style ones and I need to paint them. I think it would be best to take them apart first but before I try removing the pin with a punch and hammer has anyone done this and if so how did they do it?

I have a thread on here following the rebuild/respray of my 90. One of the things I did was upgrade to TD5 hinges which are cadmium plated and shouldn't rust as badly as the old ones and have a nylon washer between the parts to stop the two halves rubbing together and removing any paint.

You need to etch prime then to get good adhesion to the cadmium, you are wasting your time if you don't. If they are already painted then give it a good key, about 300grit.

I put them flat on a board and painted them, I was using 2 pack in a gun so I had to let that go off fully then when I was painting other panels I turned them opened the hinge and misted the bit that was missed and gave the back a mist to colour match everything.

Let the hinges dry well before bolting them on and use lots of grease between the bolt head and the hinge to minimise rubbing the paint off as you tighten the bolt into the recess.

Thanks for the tips, I was worried about the paint cracking as it set around the washers, I assume that wasn't a problem with your repaints?

No, as long as the paint is laid on in thin coats and doesn't pool up into a blob that could crack when moved I think you will be fine.
