Defender CSW 110 W reg TD5

Okay i have lost all my headlights and rear lights other than main beam flash.

I have replaced switch, tried bridging pink relay terminals with no joy.

Multimeter shows 10v power to one terminal on switch but when I move the switch to side or dipped it shows no power on same terminal.

the power to the switch plug is there, I have tried two new swithces and the same problem is still there so removed pink relay and tried bridging terminals 2 and 8 (i think?) still nothing. I tried multimeter to terminals on relay holder and got nothing!

Can anyone give any advice or something I could try as cannot drive in the dark and need to get Defender back on the road.

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum. :)
It might be something as straightforward as a bad earth. And/or you may have a chaffed wire giving you a short somewhere. If that 10v disappears when you use the switch to put the lights on, then maybe the electricity is taking an easier route to earth than through the meter? I'm not great with electrickery, just sharing thoughts.

Have you replaced the switch on the steering column? If so was it a britpart item? Only reason I ask is the bloke I bought my 90 off replaced the switch with a britpart one the same day I bought it,and that night it failed again. I think I have a Lucas one ( or whatever the decent make is), and that solved my problems!

It does sound like a faulty switch/switches, you cant tell by looking at them but the plastic heats up slightly over use and the metal contacts drop just enough down into the plastic to not get s good contact with the switch, these are exactly the symptoms you describe, then you only have high beam flash

I've had this - 10volts that drops off on demand says there is a poor connection somewhere leaking voltage and it will not fire your lights. I found a really corroded connection at the fuse box (lots of blue powder on the wire) and re-soldering it sorted the problem. Took a bit of chasing around to find it.

thank you!

so I just need to follow the wire from the fuse box to the switch checking for problems?

First I need to find it......
I think it'll be from the switch to the headlights!
If you're getting 10v to the switch, then that's not good. Might indicate poor feed to fuse box or corroded fuse connection etc.
When you put the switch on then you are connecting that 10v supply to your headlights, but it's not getting there. It's getting grounded to the body/chassis somewhere and going straight back to the negative of the battery.
My inexperienced summary is a) main fault = short between switch and headlights b) secondary fault = poor supply to the switch.

So the problem appears to be a damaged orange block above and behind the fusebox near the gear stick.

Problem is how do i get to it to fix it as i have air conditioning!

Help......

Check the spade fuse holders as I had a similar problem on my 110 Hard top
I managed to cure it by removing the fuses and sticking a spike in behind to tighten the top and bottom spring clips on each.

Your TD5 is probably similar to those of us with older vehicle, but pictures always help! Use the upload a file button, bottom right of the post window. :)
