Hi,
I have a 2001 TD5 defender 90 and I’m having a slight problem with the handbrake and the handbrake light on the dash. So thought I would see if any of you could shed me some light.

The problem is when I pull the handbrake up to its full position the handbrake light doesn’t come on but if you start to pull it up the light comes on from the beginning and when you get half way up the light goes off and so when the handbrake is on the handbrake light isn’t on.

Hope this makes sense

Thanks Sam

Personally I would check the wiring and fit a new switch. Haven't looked but can't cost too much I wouldn't have thought.
Also check whatever operates the switch.

As well as the switch itself, the wire is apt to become brittle where it joins the spade terminal. Mine snapped off, so I re-joined it with a dollop of solder.

It's stopped working again now, so I may need to re-do it.

The switch is on the handbtrke under the rubber cover.
It's a 'Normally Open' switch that closes as the handbrake is lifted up.
The switch has a bit of wriggle room and is not of the highest quality.
The spring is quite weak, the plastic button flimsy and the contacts are almost open to the atmosphere.

Thake the rubber off, remove the switch and clean it with some brake cleaner. Press the button in a few times, check the single wire connection is OK and refit.
You can get new ones (be careful there are left and right handed versions) £20 ish for an OEM or £12 for one in a blue bag.
