I have a 2004 Defender TD5 double cab
..approx 165,000 km on the clock. There is a Tuneit V PD chip fitted to the truck.
Tunit Performance product range
A few weeks back, one of a few problems started firstly, the truck would lose all engine power for a second, almost as though one had switched the key off and back on. This got progressively worse until eventually the orange engine management light came on, and the throttle did not work. I had to switch off the engine, and restart .this then restored the throttle operation. I had a 2000 TD5 with a blown engine, so we swapped the throttle across from this vehicle, but it would not work. I then found out that the 2000 had a 2 pot throttle and the 2004 has a three pot and the throttle had to be configured to work using Test Book. We replace the original throttle, which then seemed to work fine, apart from a new problem ..every time one depressed the throttle past about 70-75% of its travel, it would revert to a de-sensitised mode .in other words, in order to get the same performance for a given throttle position before this de-sensitised mode kicked in, the throttle had to be pressed almost to the floor. Full engine performance could not be reached the truck had to be switched off and then restarted. I am led to believe that this reduced sensitivity of the throttle kicks in when changing from high range to low range.
I bought a new throttle, suspecting that the throttle was the problem, but the new throttle is permanently in this reduced sensitivity mode, making the truck terrible to drive it is almost like driving a car that has a stretched throttle cable ..one can never get the proper performance because one never gets beyond probably one third throttle. The old problem has started again, but only in the rain, that of the engine losing all power for a second or so, then coming back again. I initially thought that this could be the crank/flywheel sensor, but apparently if a fault is detected by the ECU, the management system immediately reduces all inputs and the engine will only idle. I did a trip from Durds up to Pongola dam with very little trouble apart from the reduced sensitivity issue every now and then, until I got to the dirt road that goes to the lodge I was staying at within half a km the orange management light came on and the throttle went dead. This happened four or five times, but only on the dirt road. Once back on tar, was fine apart from the sensitivity issue. I have read of a similar fault occurring which was caused by a faulty high/low range switch but then have also read of the same thing happening due to a faulty MAF sensor I have disconnected the MAF sensor and driven the truck ..no noticeable change, and the reduced sensitivity issue still occurs. I contacted the manufacturers of the Tune-it chip re the above as well they informed me that the chip will in no way affect the throttle operation, as it ties into the yellow cables that go to the injectors after the ECU. It is a simple plug and play system which prolongs the opening of the injectors by a few fractions of a second. I have also disconnected the chip from the system that above faults still occur.
I am at my wits end now .frustrated beyond belief. Any help or info you can supply would be most welcome.
One thing I forgot to mention ..we did connect up to Test Book, and the fault code was driver input .
