Hi guys, so after neigh on 12 months of being stood I've rescued a family friends disco, after getting a clean bill of health, courtesy of the certified government establishment.

I took the disco for her first maiden voyage, where 2 miles in it decided to pack up and refuse to start for 5minutes. It cracked up again no problem and drove around for a wee while only for it to conk out again at asda, today it's got me to and from work without a blip?

Bad diesel? Pump or injectors? Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated.

Check red plug on ecu for oil, Google td5 injector harness or search on here

Fuel injector seals are common, I'm about to do mine. Check dipstick level for excess, smell of diesel in engine oil in worse cases

Could be fuel pump but if it packed up it wouldn't be intermittent imo

Also there's a valve in the filter head (drivers side rear wheel arch on the chassis) but I don't know much about that

My current symptoms are intermittent poor starting and one instance of cutting out under load since saturday. Shes on the drive now awaiting payday :) and a new injector harness and seals and service kit/oil
 
I checked the stick of dip the other day and it did seem a bit high. I'm guessing you check after a run? I thought it was just excess that had splashed up the tube.

I've ordered some new seals and a filter as they're the cheapest replacement parts. I'll go and have a look and a sniff now it's only been stood 10 mins or so.

Td5 dip**** is notoriously crap for dragging oil up itself when you draw it out. Just check when cold as normal i believe.

Get a genuine injector loom as well. Even if you don't have oil at the red plug in ECU now, you will do eventually so might as well change the loom while you're doing the seals. LRtradeparts do an oem loom and rocker gasket for £38 on fleabay
 
No diesel smell in the oil it just smells like oil. Haven't checked the red plug I'll do that at work tomorrow. Ive ordered the loom and gasket there was an oem one for £30 with the gasket on lrtradeparts?
 
I guess a good dose of wd and clean up would help the cause a bit?

Don't use wd40 mate it leaves a **** residue. Use electrical contact cleaner or brake cleaner. Even if you change the injector loom, the length of harness from it to the ECU will still be contaminated so needs cleaning periodically to prevent ECU damage. Best bet to change loom ad you're doing injector seals cuz it has to come out anyway

There is 2 types, 1 for 10p prefix engines (upto 2001 i think)and 1 for 15p (2001 on). Check the descriptions of both items cuz the later one is a bit more.

Cool I have more brake cleaner than I know what to do with anyway. I'm quite surprised that oil can get in the loom.

Had a gander it was 2001+ so should be safe.

Edit: just checked the ecu connector, it's dryer than a dry thing

Check the plug that goes up to the underside of the rocker cover (front left as you look from front of vehicle) as you may see oil there too, that hasn't quite made it`s way down the loom to the ecu yet

There is no oil in either end of the loom. So that's checked off the list.

Faulty crank sensor maybe
good shout too Johnlad as the fuel pressure regulator is above & slightly forward of the crank sensor so may of spilt diesel down there.

There doesn't seem to be any leakage onto the crank sensor. I'll check the resistance maybe?
 
Im beginning to think there may be a broken wire or exposed wire maybe could be completely off the mark. Since I've checked the other side of the connector it's all gone to pot. Cut out on the way home from work as well as struggled to start.
 
Crank sensor is only sensor that would stop a td5 dead. If it was faulty you wouldn't even have poor starting afaik or cutting out. It would just be dead.

My money's still on injector seals. Surprised you had no oil at oil in either plug, would expect a small amount on any td5 lol.

Or dodgy wire as you say. Td5s common for chafing through harness in places although i wouldnt know where to start looking
 
I'll dig out my multimeter this weekend and have a right good probe about it can't be anything too trivial I will have a fondle and report my findings
 
When you put ignition on pos 2 and the pump is priming, can you hear the pump noise changing pitch? Listen in the engine bay for air being purged as well. Mines doing this so if changing my seals works I'll let you know. You'll prob be sorted before me though I don't get paid til Friday then got to wait for parts to be delivered :(

Yeah the pump is quite vocal and it changes pitch or it'll stay loud when the engine is running. I haven't listened for air being purged in the engine bay but she's parked up til the bits arrive so I'll have a listen tomorrow evening and let you know.
 
I've changed the seals but the pump noise sounds no different? It is slightly quieter but not much it does seem to run a bit better though

Is that normal just being a mild hum?
