Hey guys...

I was cruising at between 130-150 kms and had been constant at this speed for longer than two hours... and suddenly my defenders fuel pump starting maked weird noises.

The noise was as if the pump was purging air from the system. The last time i heard such noise was when I replaced the fuel filter. The tank still had about a quarter of fuel left. The noise would go and return again but there was hardly any difference in performance; I thought it was about to fail but after about 10 mins it went normal.

Is there are thing to worry about?? Is my pump about to give up? I am using cooper fuel filter, does this have to do anything with this?

Are you sure that your fuel gauge is correct. I know that on my 110 td5 when the gauge is says half full there is little more than a quater left so I never let it get to the reserve mark in case it gets air locked. The last time I changed the fuel filter the pump stayed whining for two days but no problems since.
 
Yup im sure fuel guage is fine because I always refuel when it is below the reserve mark and I was sill driving it for the next hour or so...
 
Play it by ear mate I think its proberly nothing to worry about. But I could be wrong Im geting used to td5 engines and they aint normal diesel engines. Shifty is the man to ask on here he has fcuk all to learn about td5's. Good luck I hope it works out.

Hi All. First time poster here. Mainly because for the 5 years I've had my 110 (a 51 plate TD5) this is the first time I've had a problem, 145k later, but hay-ho!

Raider, how did the pump problem progress? I ask because I have also endured a whining noise from the tank for the last year or so. No noticeable loss of power, no leaks, no excessive fuel use..! Just a noisy tank. I also ran out of fuel not long after the noise started when the gauge was reading quarter full. Having always filled from nr empty prior to.

After speaking to a garage bloke his opinion was ' it ain't broken, don't need fixing!' but it's becoming a nuisance.

Does anyone else have an answer? TIA

A point to note is I once dabbled with bio about 4 years ago but not for long.

Change the fuel filter. El cheapo fuel filters have been known to cause this.
 
Thanks for that Ratty, but I did that during my last intrim service with no effect. (Nearly killed the battery trying to prime it again afterwards IIRR!)

does it only do it when you get down to a quarter of a tank or all the time?
 
Filling the tank deadens the noise to a quite hum. As the tank empties it gets louder, to the point that pedestrians look round at red lights etc, (but for the wrong reason!:eek:)
 
does it start first flick of the key or does it need to crank over for a couple of seconds before it starts?

It sounds like you are drawing air in once the engine is running. Check the fuel regulator at the back of the engine isn't dripping.

Serious b/down on M1 prevents any further F/Pump investigation, now she's sat in a garage awaiting diagnostic/repair for suspected oil pump probs...

I can see the £££'s rolling away as I type!

Betcha the fuel pump has gone. Going noisey is often the first sign that it's on the way out. In most cases the increased volume is cos it's drawing in air. Yours looks like it's for the more serious reason.:(
 
Latest (over a week later) from Simon Services;
The oil pump came away/stopped working!? Fixed
Big end bearing replaced
The turbo replaced


They took it out for a road test, the engine ran great. Then, while on the r/t, she broke down again..! FUEL PUMP DIED!!!

So another week up amongst the rafters awaiting pump.

Now the really bad news, I've to hire a 'normal' car to holiday in Wales at the w/e :(

First timer on the site, just back from Derbyshire this evening where I picked up my '02 plate Defender 110 TD5 station wagon. On the way back to ayrshire, scotland, I filled the vehicle up at tesco in Glossop, drove at a steady 60-70mph on the motorway, stopped at gretna green and the car struggled to start, but managed to get it going after a couple of goes. Got it home and was reversing into my drive when it conked out. tried starting and no luck, left it to settle for about 10 minutes and eventually got it going. I heard a whirring noise coming from the back drivers side under the wheel arch. It sounded electronic perhaps, could this have anything to do with the starting problems? Would love to hear from someone with a clue as to what to do next. I have the vehicle under a 1 year warranty, so would the problem be covered?

If that noise isn't there after it's cut out the in tank pump is goosed.
