Hi.
I spent a few hours this afternoon putting a PIR in the garage to power a flouresent tube, all went well no problems.
Great I'll do the fuel filter on the Disco while I'm in the mood.........:(

I unplugged the water sensor, unscrewed the filter, screwed the sensor onto the new one & screwed it back in place & re connected the sensor plug. All in all 10 mins job done.
Purged the system & ran the truck a few minutes.
I then had to go run an errand a few hours later & you guessed it.....it won't start.
The pump runs & switches off as though it's pressurised the system

I have repurged the system, checked the sensor washer is in place & short of putting the old filter back basically run out of ideas.
Has anyone encountered faulty filters ? it's filling with fuel but bloody thing won't run.
Anything else I have missed?

needs more purging, turn on ignition and press accelerator 5+ times in quick succession, it will then self purge, sometimes had to do this upto 5 times

I have had to leave it before I accidentally set it on fire........
I have put the battery on charge & will try again in the morning before the xmas eve pub run.

Cheers & merry xmas

My fuel pump died after I fitted a new filter. I think the extra work of purging just finished it off.

Hope you have better luck......

I can hear it spinning up but not sure if it's giving enough pressure, I am beginning to suspect the same.
I can hear air being sent round the system back to the tank & the filter is refilling when I have taken it off.

Bet Santa won't bring me one of those :(

Yep... I had the same thing. Had truck serviced, perfect. Next day it wouldn't go over 30mph, and like a miss fire.. Fuel pump Kaput..

Took mine out to check the internal filters (All clear) & struggled like buggery to get it back in under the pressure from the springs on the pump, is there an easy way to do this minus all the swearing & sweating.....?

You sure you,ve checked the pump fiters, as theirs one inside the pump body. You have to remove plastic casing to get to it.
As for fitting once you, pushed it into place get someone to hold it in place with a long srewy, then you can **** about with the lockring, still got to swear though.

Yup got the body off & checked the mesh one,it was not blocked so bunged it all back together & still won't run.
I have borrowed a Defender that my mate rebuilt from the ground up until mine gets sorted.
I swapped the old filter back on last night to eliminate a faulty filter too.

Are you leaving it to completely Finnish it's bleeding cycle? (ignition on press throttle five times) It feels like an age when it's doing it but won't start until its completely finished it

Ran it for 5 cycles & it doesnt even give an indication of trying to fire up.
Now the pump just keeps spinning so presumably it's not developing enough pressure for the sensor to tell it to switch off.

I'll give it another go this afternoon but don't hold out much hope.

Cheers

Replaced my fuel filtter some time ago purged the system gave it the pump the pedal and wait 3 mins with it still switched on and she started no problem.Next day gets to end of street and she died turned out to be the water in fuel sensor was on its way took it off and put the plastic plug back in its place and no problem since.Re the fuel pump you have to fit the rubber sealing ring to the tank first or its a pig to get the locking ring back on.

I have put the plastic bung off the new filter on because the water sensor was leaking.
Going to Paddocks tomorrow to get a new one.
I am thinking the new pump will be here by the weekend so will stick with the Defender until then.
I am hoping no one chirps in & tells me the sensor needs to be on.....:(

p.s. I reread this & just been out to check, the reason mine was so bloody hard to get back on was the seal is still on the tank & there's one on the pump.....got to speak to the guy who sorted it last time soon....

The water sensor is unnecessary (on mine it lights up when there's a lot of spray from the road......). So I can't see how the sensor could make it die.

Can someone answer this one for me please?
I have a pump with a black rubber seal on & there is one on the top of the tank,is this correct or should there be only one seal?
Some diagrams show 2 seals & other only one.
On nights tonight but once I surface tomorrow this will be the first project.
Cheers & thanks for the help so far.

Microcat shows just 1 seal between the pump and tank. ESR3806

OK here we go.
Fitted the new pump & purged it & it started second go.:)

Here is what I think has happened.
A couple of years ago the first pump died at xmas so not completely sure it was pump related a guy I know towed it in & diagnosed it was indeed a buggered pump.
He fitted a new one which lasted 17 months. I thought "no way is it a fuel pump issue again" so he again took it in because it failed halfway down the drive in a foot of snow.
This one lasted 7 months.....

I have now a possible cause, the seal came off with the pump so I'm thinking he fitted the pump with the seal on the pump instead of fitting it to the tank lip, this allowed all the crap, salt etc...thrown up by spray off wet roads to go over the top of the tank & seap past the incorrectly fitted seal.
This crap is presumably very abrasive & goosed the internals of the pump.
There wasn't a rubber seal on the tank as I thought it was the hard plastic lip.

Sound feasible?

Thanks for all the input & I hope this thread will enlighten someone in the future.
