Definately not buy a TD5 now .... I have a Delphi, glass bowl, and 296 filter on my 300tdi.
To be honest i'd likely fit the same to a TD5, but if they've discontinued the oil filter whats next ... fuel filter and air filter ... pollen filter. The engine ??

Ooh the angst ...

Am I the only one who isn't precious about what filters I use? I use what ever is available and at a good price for all of my filters. A set of filters tends to only last me about 2-3 months with the mileage I do anyway. I work on the principle that the oil is fresh the engine is in good condition and with the regularity of changes it is well flushed so at that point a filter is a filter imo.

The genuine fuel filter was definitely the best, but l've used Mahle and Mann filters over the years and the engine has been fine.

I saw a thread somewhere about a guy that had an issue with oil pressure. I can't remember exactly what the outcome was, but apparently there was a hole in the filter that allows the oil to flow through and on the cheaper filter the diameter was smaller restricting the flow. I was astounded that when you considered the amount involved in a filter that they punched the wrong size hole at a critical point! It was something like a 7mm hole in the cheaper filter compared to 11mm in the reputable manufacturer. I think it equated to about twice the area in the better filter which gives considerably less restricted flow of oil.

To be fair, up to seeing this, I to would have used the cheaper option. However when you consider how important oil flow is to maintaining your engine, compared to the cost per mile of the more expensive filter. I think at the time a Britpart was around £3.50 compared to a Mahle at £7, so around twice the cost. However looking at prices now it looks like Britpart around £7 and mahler around £9 so the difference is less.

I am not a parts snob, but do consider when a cheap part may impact on other parts and I must admit that filters are something I want from a reputable manufacturer. I consider quality control really important on filters as I don't want cr*p getting through them because of scrimping on glue etc.

But I am certainly no expert and I may be spending more than I need too!

And as for the guy with the oil pressure problem, fitting a filter from a reputable manufacturer cured it!
