Thing is what are you wanting? Tyre size also plays into the picture. If you look above they use a 1.211 transfer box, believe TD5 was a 1.411 transfer box. With factory size tyres. So what size tyres you want or are using? It is not as simple as saying change transmission to get better MPG.
 
I'll swap my 1.2 for you 1.4 if you're wanting a cruiser ;) well maybe, need to see how the 1.2 does in mine with me having 4.7 diffs in it still

You will want the 1.2 then . A 1.4 will only give you about 55mph and will be screaming its nut off.:eek:

Yes I was thinking my top end might be limited on a 1.4 but I still need to drop the discovery front and rear axle on at some point as I want disc brakes, not sure if I'm keeping the 3.54's in them though or swapping in the 4.7's

what would be wrong with 3.54's in your V8? Off road you got low range, and in high you got a nice driver. That is what NA models had was 3.5 them 3.9 and they would do 80mph before they rolled

Nothing really as they're currently mated to the 1.2 box, it was an 'if' for when I put the disco axles on wether or not the 3.54's would gear it a little too high with the 1.2 box in there too

I don't need nor want to do above 60 on those drum brakes for now anyway :eek:

Not sure really, I suppose would just be nice to have a 6th gear for better cruising on the motor way and more torque when laning. To be perfectly honestly it just looks nicer in the cab, much more modern, less potting shed on wheels kind of feel.

you wont gain a thing with it IMO.If anything switch to a 1.2 transfer box. Go to ashcrofts as they have a calculator for the right gearing for engine,transfer box and tyre size. 80 mph is about max you want any way

I dont like going above 60 max tbh, hard to stop at those speeds!

Dont suppose just the gearstick would fit in a TD5 box?
 
if you put the puma gearlever on it its not going to sit at the right height from the looks of things

that said the gear lever is only bolted onto the shift mech so unbolt and put a new one on as long as it fits the splined section or make up a block/socket style adaptor
 
Hmm so could fit. But may be a bit odd like you said, ill take a look at the breakers see if i can pick one up cheap and have a go.

I am running a 300tdi auto (with edc) in my 90 with 265/75 bfg and 3.54 diffs and a 1.2 tB It is about as high as you want to go . On motorway it will be a good cruiser , but with the auto I find it will just hold TCL when towing on flat . Solo it handles motorway type gradients Ok, but anything much more and it changes out of TCL I would expect a six speed to be a similar type scenario with a 1.2 and 265/75 HTSH .
 
I'd assume that there is some benefit to fitting the 6 speed to a TDi, else why would M&D go to the trouble of engineering a kit to do it?

just meeting a demand with people not knowing about changing transfer boxes to 1.2 to get the same thing, Puma is now a 1.2 instead of a 1.4 in older defenders. and then you have to take in tyre sizes and the front and rear differential ratios also to get what you want. but seldom is done. Most just think cool a 6 speed i want one with out knowing what they are doing. So a market is created and first to come up with a conversion kit gets the Big carrot;)
 
Fit a 1.2 transfer box, a large intercooler and remap with some extra sound deadening and it'll be as good a motorway cruiser as you'll ever need.

I've 33" with 1.2 transfer and standard 3.54 cwps with more or less all the mods done to the engine without actually rebuilding it and I wouldn't want any higher gearing to be honest.

At times when towing, an overdrive with a 1.4 transfer would be nice just for pulling off and things or just to drop down from 5th overdrive to normal 5th when going up hills but still doesn't justify the cost of them I reckon.

Better off fitting a bigger turbo and other mods to a TD5 with a 1.2 transfer box than an overdrive I reckon as they are quite expensive for just splitting the gearing.
