Been wondering about this for a while, would it be possible/sane to do this?

Do love my Td5 but would like the 6 speed gearbox from the Pumas.

Any major disadvantages from doing this?

Also would it be a 'drop in'?

At the moment just an idea...

Been wondering the same myself,

Motor and diesel do a conversion for TDi to 6 speed.

Its the sort of thing I'd expect Ashcroft to do.

I've seen a 6speed box up close and theres a bit of a difference shape wise, it hadn't been looked after either and shattered the casing when the prop shaft broke off!

Jesus thats heavy damage! 6 speeds arnt even that old!

Ive heard of 300tdis being fitted to 6speeds but never Td5s.

Not sure what you'd have to do flywheel housing side whether the tdci one is transferable, the slave cylinder is inside the bell housing though

Ideally it would be nice to have the 6 speed box + a disco transfer box to get the max out of everything...

heard them 6spd puma boxes had issues with them. Got that from a senior member on here
True they suck.
Before they went on general release in defenders Mr Ashcroft told me he reckoned they would be a PITA , seems he was right

why the interest in 6 speed box

It always feels like it needs to change into an extra gear as you join the motorway.

You don't get many motorways in the east of the country and the chances of overtaking the tractors are also slim so it's an experience you don't get very often James. :D :D :D :D

6 speed isnt an extra one on top

If its worse then ill stick with my current box; just an idea really. Better/highrr cruising speed while keeping the engine under less pressure.

It also looks much nicer inside the cab :D

I have also heard bad things about the puma boxes.

Re motorways though, I havnt driven a puma, so dont know, but ive driven various cars with 6 gears, some the 6th was an extra motorway cruise gear, others ened up with a similar final ratio in 6th and you would 5th, you just ended up changing gear more.

I have a 6speed car and it feels sportier as you nip through the gears but there's no real need for that on a defender as its not a hot hatch or sports saloon etc

Alternatively a Roamerdrive (formerly Roverdrive) is supposedly a very tough unit that could be used in any of the gears (though I don't really think you need a 10 speed box!). However, at £1400-£1500, it's not the cheapest option...

they gear box was designed for there new motor. the gear ratios are kinda set in between the 5 spd box with 1st being just a bit lower and 6th about the same, and the other 4 are there in between to get max torque and fuel economy as possible.

If you did a search you could find out the ratios of each box, and look at the over drive gear 5th r380 and the 6th in the puma will be very close

Fair enough, though was also interested if it would be a 'drop in' for a Td5 engine.

If the Puma gearbox gets more torque and mileage then surely it would be a plus?
