I need some help deciding on my next car I have always been tempted by the disco td5s but have been put off by the bad name they have for realiablity I have recently been looking at ford rangers as an alternative as they appear to be less money for a newer car with less milage can someone help me make my mind up as I haven't been able to choose one for weeks I prefer the disco but the ranger makes more sense money wise thanks

I doubt that on the disco forum u'll be encouraged to get a ranger:doh:.........find a ford forum, put the same question and see what u get there then u decide;)............good luck:D.........i just can tell u that i have 190.000km with mine and never let me down.....it's a matter of preventative maintainance
 
Yh cheers well I was looking for good comments like that to convince myself to get the disco as the fords tempting

Landrover, on the other hand, is a far more robust vehicle that will outlast the Ford x 10.

Yes, you will have to fix things on a Landrover, but that can be said for most modern vehicles.

Forums, especially this one, are full of very knowledgable and keen Landy owners, who share a wealth of experience.

If you cant use a spanner then Disco 2 ownership can be a little " painfull ".

My TD5 ES has done 115k miles and has a complete history. It costs about £350 for a major service and £200 ish for a minor service. In my book, the Disco TD5 likes to be maintained and if you spot a minor issue, deal with it before it becomes a major one.
I cannot describe it as unreliable as it has only ever failed once with a faulty hose. Buy safely with a complete history and if worried, pay for a warranty.
If you drive 20,000 miles a year, budget £600 for additional maintenance.

The Disco looks better, drives better, tows better and stops better than the Ford and they represent good value for money.

Buy the newest one you can afford and check everything thoroughly including the rear air suspension (with doors shut).

Worthwhile upgrades are KN filter, PSI chip, exhaust and cross drilled and vented discs with uprated pads. - V8 like grunt with respectable fuel consumption.

Def NOT a worthwhile upgrade, simply don't filter as much as the factory paper ones, cost a lot more money and don't provide any more "umph" to the engine...........basically a waste of money
 
OK the ford sounds sensible but if you have ever thought of owning a land Rover you will never be happy with what you got. Trust me you will look at every LR that passes and think I should have got one of those. I did and eventialy had to get one it drove me mad.
Now I as happy as a pig in do-doos. You can't beat em you have to join em.

" Performance " filter only fitted 2500 miles ago, so cant be that, right ?.

Wrong.

Cause I live up a mile and a half track which gets very dusty, the filter was completely clogged.

Never had that problem with the paper one.

Cheers for that was exactly what I wanted to hear I keep thinking that if I don't buy one I will hate myself afterwards grown up around landys an would like to buy British rather than an American truck built in japan thanks for all the advice guys

Nice contradiction then:
Performance filter doesn't filter as much, but get's clogged up faster.
I don't really get the combination.

Having spoken to the manufacturer, they have told me that they do an " offroad " filter which is better suited to dusty conditions and the " normal " filter is more suited to road biased use.

We,ve had a bit of rain now so problem solved !.

Make sure you have the KN cleaner pack and oil. I clean mine once every three months or so and re-oil the element with the spray oil which is red in colour. The pack cost me about a tenner.

Has to be a disco. Mine's cost me about £1,400 in 2 years (34,000 miles)and that includes 4 tyres.
I take it to France a couple of times a year and even had the front discs and pads
changed in a french village by the local garage.
watch out for water ingress on the fuse board under the dash, it sends the electrics
haywire but easy to fix with a bit of black mastic under the bonnet.
 
I bought my N Reg 96' D1 Feb 09, with 130K on the clock. She cost me a Grand straight, coz I really really really wanted one, got her off Ebay and fell in love. The only problem I found was the sills needed replacing, and all 4 bits cost me £300 fitted them with help from a mate.
When I had the crash she had 188K on the clock the engine was rock solid, but more than anything she had her own personality was a really member of the family.

No matter how much they cost you will love them like your kids, yes you my get mad and Pi$$ed off.
But I promise you will never want to get rid.
