I have always thought the cooling / viscous fan is made for hot climates.
And is a bit over the top for average UK weather, so i was thinking of removing it for winter.
Anyone tried this or views thoughts on doing it.
Electric fan maybe ?

why?
does your heater not work?
mine is ok with it on as it should be, not the fastest things at warming up! must be really cold in Derby???? lol

its fitted for when the car isnt travelling at some speed and so air passing through rad
 
Took mine off a few years ago, no problems even in central London in the middle of Summer
are you sure?, do you have an additional coolant temp gauge with own sensor fitted?... the dash gauge goes up from the middle at 120*C so you can drive around all summer at 110 coolant temp without even knowing it ...and that's not healthy for the head on a long run, better check the oil level more often in this case cos at that temp the injectors seals are not feeling well, nor does the whole cooling system that's why they made the electric fan to kick in above 110*C to help cooling cos everything above 105 is too much

+1 I took my fan off, 4 weeks later the head cracked! Possibly a coincidence, but now shes back on the road, the fan is back on as well!

Fit a rad muff. Cheap and no chance of it going wrong.

Or have a Nanocom plugged in with live data showing the actual coolant temp.
 
Not sure what you will achieve by removing it as it does pretty much nothing until the heat from the rad is hot enough to make it activate, should imagine if you're having troubles with it warming up then a new thermostat would be worth investing in, remember there should be no circulation through your radiator until the engine is up to temp so even if the fan was running it would be cooling only the water in the rad!
I would def recommend not messing with how the vehicle regulates it temp just repair if faulty, it's not worth cracking heads etc.
 
+1^^^, unless it's stuck locked, try to stop it with a rolled newspaper when the engine is cold, it should stop easyly
 
Now thats a very good point the viscous fan could be jammed, having said that it spins free with engine stopped.
Stat is new
 
The real test is with engine running and cold rad cos it has a bimetalic valve which can misshehave, though if the engine warms up in 4 miles it's quite normal for a Td5
 
Yes i dont think there is a lot wrong, but will check it.
If iam honest iam not keen on removing fan knowing my luck head gasket will go
