Just dumped the head gasket on my TD5, not yet sure of the total damage but looking on the dark side can anybody tell me if there are any insurmountable problems in putting a late engine in my `99 model?
Only bought the car `cause the wife liked the colour now 12months on I would`nt part with him for the world. Smitten of Sussex:mad: :) :(

Must be the day for head gaskets, mine has just gone on a disco1 200tdi
Think I've beaten you there - my '99 TD5 just cracked its head. Apparently this is not uncommon. Not sure I agree with the TDi300 idea though - had one once and it was the most unreliable car I had ever owned. My fault for buying it new I suppose. The TDi200 I replaced it with was generally pretty good though...

Got the head off today,OH BOY!! Some wassock has had the head off before, sheared the locating studs and put it all back together with the broken bits still in the hole below the level of the gasket.I think I`ll down a bottle of something and worry about it tomorrow.

 looks like hammer and centre pop time to see if you can get the studs out. Failing that some stud extractors may do the trick.

Fancy packing up at 9.15pm  whats wrong with the last hour:D

Been up since 4.30am as well:(

Is it not the LOCATING DOWELS that are broken?
The original ones are PLASTIC, and they shear in service and the head 'slips@ causing HGFailure.

If it is the plastic locating dowels that are bust they will be easy to lift, and I believe stainless steel after-fits are available.

Yes, sure is. I'll post when I've got the bill. My LR man (Stuart Gilbert in Kent - knows what he's doing) says recons are a bad idea so he's fitting a new Genuine Part. Also it's a complex job putting it all together, so a lot of my cash is just going on the work rather than the part. If I was doing it meself like I used to when I was younger and less lazy I'd try to get a scrap one already set up - or even a whole 2nd hand engine I think. At least I should get another 100k plus out of it this way. Incidentally, it took a long time to go - been using a bit of coolant since August, and only really started to get bad when I did a long trip on the Autobahns - probably about 4000 miles to get to the clouds of steam stage. I should probably have stuck it in an auction and let one of you guys buy it...

But what would I do with the big hole at the back where the fifth cylinder should be?
