OK, I know what one switch for the electric seats does (moves / tilts the squab / base) and that the second switch tilts the back forward / backward, but what is supposed to happen if the backrest switch is moved up/down?

It must be meant to do something more that make a feeble whirring noise!

Have I missing out on some amazing feature all this time?

Enlightenment would be appreciated! ;)
 
On some vehicles, the height of the seat cushion can be adjusted. Push the switch up or down to raise or lower the cushion, much like the D1.

Look at page 24 in the D2 owners handbook the info is there.
