Hi everyone,
This afternoon my daughters Discovery TD5 engine Discovery year 2,000 (Millenium model), suddenly started to run slightly rough-not the sort of roughness associated with an injector out,but between idle and around 2,000 RPM it definitely had lost its normal smoothness. Is it likely to be an injector not performing as it should.Strangely,It was down to around 1/8 of a tank of fuel left before I filled it with fuel-still the slight hesitancy present after fuelling-co-incidence or not I wonder? If I were to fit a new injector,do they need to be coded to the vehicle? If the vehicle is hooked up to Land Rovers own diagnostic kit, would a fault of this nature show up?
Any advice would be most welcome-I am used to working on the old Disco's without mountains of electrickery!!
Thanks in anticipation,
Regards-Adrian

Injectors do need to be coded to the ECU, but will still work if not.

Unlikley its an injector.

Is it just not as smooth up to 2000 rpm ?, or is there a lack off power/hesitation whilst driving ?.

Theres so many possibilitys, from oil in the injector loom to a faulty diesel pump.

Hi again,
Many thanks for the response.I live in Herefordshire.I have been using the vehicle for a couple of months. While driving it yesterday around 35 MPH I suddenly became aware that it had lost its customary smoothness. On experimenting,I discovered that once above 2,000 RPM,ithe engine ran smoothly.Below that it exhibits slight hesitancy and is lacking a small degree of power. The fuel tank was showing around 1/8 full-i've never allowed it to get this low.Common sense dictates that its pure co-incidence,but I wonder? What is the likely possibility of it being the ECU controlling injection? Is this a common fault?Oh yes-put 2 pots of diesel injector cleaner in the tank this am.Am returning home to Herefordshire tomorrow from Mansfield, so will see if it has any effect. The cost of parts are so expensive these days and a hit and miss approach to replacing parts that so many garages have these days is not an option I wish to pursue-hence my seeking knowledgeable advice on here from those who know.
Many thanks-Adrian

Check the red plug into the ecu for oil.

Take off the battery cover, and undo the screw holding the ecu. Pull it up steady, and whip off the plug.

Oil tracks down the inside of the wires from the injectors, and causes symptoms similar to your description.

A new " injector harness " is around £ 40 ish, and a straight forward job to change.

Even if it turns out not to be tha cause of your problem, it needs doing as it will play up eventually.

Get it hooked up to a Nanocom/HawkEye, if you can, as this may point you in the right direction and take the guess work out.

( forgot to mention. Make sure you dissconect the battery first and you have your radio code )

Hi,
Thanks for that.Popped by my local Landrover man today and he put the fault reader on it-No.3 injector open circuit.Said harness was likely prob and said,as you did,to check ECU plug.Got another harness from him to try,so as I planned a service this weekend,we'll do that as well.Hopefully that will sort the prob-thanks so much for your help, much appreciated.

Keep us posted !.

Hi Del,
Fixed it today-it now runs as sweet as it ever did!The prob was the injector harness.I checked the ECU plug and that was free from any oil contamination, but i cleaned it anyway with some special quick drying solvent i have which does'nt attack plastics. So to everyone on here who helped me with advice, many thanks.

Thats great, and good that you reported back with a result.

Its the first time I,VE heard/read of rough running due to injector harness oil contamination, where oil hasnt been present at the ECU. But, when I changed mine, the harness plug at the head end was swimming in oil, ( aswell as the red plug ), which obviously is enough to cause problems in your case.

Happy days !
