hi can anyone tell me. if i disconnect the auto gearbox ecu,and replace with a newer second hand one.will i have to reprograme the replaced one. the one i am buying is out of the same td5 discovery only that it is two years newer.my td5 is a 1999,the other ecu is out of a 2001 td5.i just want to try and get rid of a small problem with the gearbox.the problem is,when i select drive,it goes and when it comes to change up to the next gear about 2000 revs.it sounds like it over revs before going into the next gear.it lasts for about a second then selects.also it takes a long time to change into top gear.i have bought another ecu for my gearbox.to see if it will make any differance.also i am going to change the gearbox fillter and oil.
can anyone help.??????????????????

AKAIK the ECUs will just swap.

However, check your kick down cable. If the cable is too tight it will cause the box to shift later. Also another simple check is to check the ATF level.

That sounds like the gearbox is releasing 1st gear alright but that the engagement of 2nd gear is sluggish, or slipping.

it lasts for about a second then selects.also it takes a long time to change into top gear.

That also sounds like sluggish changes, and that tends to suggest it is time to sort it out. You might be lucky and can sort it by

1. making sure the gearbox is topped up properly.
or
2. draining the transmission fluid, then taking off the gearbox sump pan, drop the pickup pipe and clean the oil strainer. If it is gungy that suggests another problem somewhere.

OK, change the ECU thing now that you've got it, but if that makes no difference you are looking at limited options depending on your own DIY skills and your confidence in tackling a auto-box.

before you do anything get the oil and filter changed in the gearbox mine was like yours and what a difference after a oil and filter change

Mine did the same i tried changing the oil and filter but their was no difference! I no how anoying it its though. I never cured the fault as i think it was in the valve block. then the torque converter snapped so im manual now. I know ashcrofts do a recon valve block for around £185. if it is that. Dan
