Hi

Everyone

I just recently bought my second Land Rover Discovery this time been the TD5 on a 51 plate.

After a couple of days driving about ive noticed a real lack of power compared too my old 300 tdi which was standard engine.
When im driving and put my foot down it doesn't really pick up until about 2500rpm and the power peaks very quickly so I change gear and same again.

Is this a TD5 thing or does it sound like a problem to you all I have check the air filter and it does look newish but its due a good service.

Ive had it 3 days and its already having problems don't you just love discoverys :)

^^^ that ... and put new quality fuel filter, check if the wastegate rod is not stuck, check for oil in the ECU red plug, does it still have EGR? ..if yes check if it's not clogged, clean the MAP sensor(top of inlet manifold) and the AAP sensor(side of the airbox)..., check fuse F2 in enginebay fusebox, these are the simple things...if no joy after that you better plug in a tester to get closer to the answer

or if i understood well the revs are growing but the car doesnt respond there might be a slipping clutch aswell...select 3'rd gear and try to move away without heavy throttle ...if it doesnt die you need a new clutch

If I were you I would be giving her a full front to back service, changing all fluids and filters, before making any evaluation about the vehicle's performance.

You need to set a bench-line before trying to move forward.

Good luck

Hi

Everyone I gave the disco I check over off the list from sierraferry and the waste gate rod is rock solid I've managed to get it moving little bit does any one no the trick to get it moving freely again.

Thanks liam

How did you try and move the wastegate rod? You might need a pair of molegrips, then try moving it ;) Silicon oil should do the trick.

what is the f2 fuse for? I've been reading up on common td5 problems and a few people have been told to check it so I wondered what its for and why would it run with less power when the fuse has blown?

Hi

Everyone I had a day spare to play round with the truck and worked my way through the check list you guys had helpfully posted and I found it to be the waste gate control valve I've bypassed it for now until my new one arrives so thanks to you all for the information

Now it's running normal I am wanting to do afew changes like egr blank off and so ..... What's the best mods to do to get the best from the td5 engine ?
Cheers Liam

Regular oil and filter changes ;) Including the centrifugal one. EGR delete kit means you can remove the egr housing too and no longer have the plunger mechanism cutting down the airflow (doesn't look much, but if it isn't there then the airflow must be increased) and no diesel exhaust routed into clean inlet air. A de-cat pipe will help the gases exit easier. Cheaper than a cat too! (50 odd quid) Likewise removing the centre box, but that makes it sound a bit like a slow Audi Quattro   :p (I like it!)

A remap should work wonders, but I haven't gone that far yet.

you dont! A waste gate protects the engine from creating exess boost which would theoretically give you more power but this would also increase stress on varias engine parts beyond design limits therefore making engine failure a real possibility

to be honest I think I'm going to get rid of the discovery and try and get a 90. my every day driver on the farm is a fourtrak which I find really useful for towing etc with it being a short wheelbase. I used my cousins defender last year and was really impressed. his had a 200 engine fitted.
